Though I would give you all a quick update on the work that has been happening to the pickup recently. After overheating on the L2B the engine started using a lot of water and it eventually got to the point where if you left it for more than a couple of days you had to remove the spark plug and get rid of the water in #1 cyl before you could start it then when it was running I was limited to about 20 min’s of driving before it would overheat again. So to overcome this problem it was time for a new engine. I dropped the car off with Simon (Edge Engineering) on Sunday last week and picked it up again this Wednesday. The original plan was to just drop in a low mileage 1380 and keep it on drums but a few more things got replaced along the way just because it was easier to fix or upgrade them now rather than later. So the new spec is as follows: - Low mileage 1380 built by Swaymar New LCB with Play Mini single box exhaust Mini Spares inlet with HIF44 & K&N filter New Alloy Radiator with custom brackets & cowling Electric Fuel Pump Custom Rod Change with Magic Wand Style Gear stick S Disc Setup Second Hand Steering Rack Having driven the pickup home it was evident that it had plenty of grunt (for a mini) not sure how much as yet as I need to get it on the rollers and it is running a bit rich at the moment. Still need to finish off a few things just tidying up the cables and making some of it a bit neater, finish painting the bulkhead etc. I also need to sort out the wheels either get the offset sorted on my split rims to use S-Discs or go with S-Reverse Rims. Alternaticly I could just fit arches but not sure at the moment. So I just wanted to say thanks to Simon for the hard work and letting me help on a couple of evenings. I know most of the time I was getting in the way and making a mess. Anyway Jobs a good’un photos to follow after the weekend. N

Firstly I must point out that I did not actually do any of the work myself I just paid Simon to do it for me Much easier from my point of view as I dident get too dirty. To be honest I never did like the 850 engine it was always a bit gutless for my likeing. My plan was always to go 1275 and I have ended up with a much more fun car to drive. I still have the orignal engine / brakes / anciliaries etc. for rebuild though so it shouldent impact the value of the car which is a plus point. I have had a couple of very minor teathing problems over the weekend which still needs to be sorted over the winter when I get time. Although with the amout of work that has been done in the last couple of weeks I knind of expected this. Just need to find time to carry on. Got my split rims on the front now although they do stick out about 1.5" I just cant decide whether to fit arches or go with the reverse rims and hubcaps. N

Nice one Neil. Don't know if Swaymar are still around but they used to have a good reputation for quick engines. Should go well when it's sorted. M

Chuffed with the gearstick. Want to make up a thrid stick to get it right. Sorry to hear about the issues... Sorted out the roll pin for the linkage and the timing yet?

Unfortunatly the two holes in the selector shaft have become one which means I can get 1-4 but no reverse. It either needs welding and redrilling or probably as Simon says just remake the rod. And yes there is a bid list of things to do but i'm travelling back to Saudi thursday so I guess it will just have to wait. still it will give me something to do over the winter. I have done a bit of research on the engine now and looking at the paperwork it says it is a +60 rebore with 10cc dish pistons and a CR of 10:1. With this size rebore i thought it worked out to be 1330 I could be wrong... usually am. Either way i'm not too fussed if it is a 1330 it leaves me with room for another rebore later Done a bit of research on Swaymar www.swaymar.com/ they are located on the Manor Royal in Crawley literally a 5 min walk from where I work. They seem to have moved on to tunning bigger and more excotic engines now and they are also trading under Austec. Looking thorough there website its interesting to see who Technical Consultant is Anyway once its back up and running / rolling roaded etc. i'm sure it will be a good one. N

Neil, what width and offset are your splits? how far do they stick out of the body?

Hi Stephen, They are 6*10's they dont have a massive offset, with S disks they stick out of the body about 2" with drums they stick out of the body about 1" I guess with metro turbo they would stick out about 3" If you want them to stick out lots they do a larger outter rim as fitted to miglias. If you want to borrow one some time for a trial fit just give me a shout. Also mine might be for sale some time in the furute as I still can decide if I want to fit arches with the splits or no arches and S-Reverse rims. Chat later N

Right guys, Been a while since I updated my diary, mainly because the car is off the road and for ages it would not start. I think I have solved the problem now it was a faulty coil. I hooked up a spare and it seems to run OK now so I will order a new one and maybe some new leads too. I finally managed to get a photo of the engine / engine bay, the bays not painted in the areas you can see but it is painted black in the areas that are hard to reach. I will be painting the rest of the bay black soon, just to tidy it up. I also have a problem with my wheel offset now the cooper s discs are on What should I do I'm thinking of group 2 arches with a chrome strip or alternativly no arches and use S reverse rims... Any thoughts I'm not sure I want to drill the pickup shell... but then again the MB's are so nice to look at... Oh and finally heres a video of the flaming back fire caused by the coil just for a laugh... s277.photobucket.com/albums/kk80/MiniGT5/?action=view¤t=MOV00320.flvLaters N

How many years have I been saying to you the Group 2 arches will look ok . Entirely upto you of coarse , they will look ok as said . Had them on my white pick up . I will try and find the pic of it when it looked really good and take it to club meet . If you buy some I can highly recommend the Somerford ones .

I have had a look on minipickup.org there are loads of photos on there with and without arches, the thing is there are not many without arches but I still think arches are the way to go. I suppose at the end of the day its not a 100% orignal pickup so period arches cant be too bad. Anyone want to buy a set of 5 reverse rims N

Right having had the last 3 fridays off I have managed to spend a bit of time on the pickup. I have rebuilt the cyl head and fitted some valve stem seals which cured the smoking as there were none fitted orignally. I have also rebuilt a HIF44 from an old car and fitted that VMAX kit I bought at L2B 2007... I know most of you thought I would never get round to fitting it... well I did take nearly 3 years to do 3 days work Anywayw I have a strage whineing noise comming from the top of the engine. and I seem to have fixed my cold starting problems too Just gotta get it set up on a rolling road again now fix the brakes for the MOT oh and find some modern seatbelts if anyone has any spare ? N.
