We got the engine and subframe back in and the front panel on today. I'm not happy with the Smooth-a-ride cones, they make the front sit far too high so I've posted in the Mini Problem board.

ok not a problem, the exchange is a good price and much easier, but if you chose to use the kit i have the ream and the puller to do the job.

I've been a busy boy today......... I've fitted the rod change (many thanks to Alan Stone for supplying it). Fitted the new clutch master, slave cylinder, braided hose and changed the old cable clutch arm to a shorter hydraulic one. Made and fitted the last section of brake pipe and clutch pipe. Refitted the brake servo. Fitted a new ultimate top engine steady. Adjusted the tappets and filled the engine with oil. And even managed to get the engine turning over on the dodgy old battery.
Just need to get a clutch pedal return spring and then I can fit clutch pedal.

Today I finally got fed up with the crop sprayer ride height so out came the smooth-a-ride cone and in went the old front cones Job done. The smooth-a-ride cones are so tall you need to remove the top arm to get them out !!! Tomorrow I plan to get The rear arms off to see if anything can be done easily,if not I'll clean them up ready for exchange. Attachments:

Yesterday after much deliberation about buying recon radius or doing my own I took the plunge andremoved the NSR arm to see what was going on.A friend of mine had said had said "I bet the bushes and bearings are fine and its the pins which are worn" and he was right, the pin had a heavy ware ridge at the bush end but after cleaning the bush in the arm it looks fine and measures up round so I put a new pin in and all the play has gone........result. So now I will put I all back together with new pins thrusts and seals and some negative camber brackets. Today we went down to Beaulieu for the Cooper day and came away a lot wetter and lighter in the pocket after buying a Maniflow system,Grp 2 arches, negative camber brackets, front indicators, halogen head lamps & bowls,ht leads, spark plugs and caliper bolts. The plan is now to fit the new parts and then get the engine started next Sunday (fingers crossed).

The plan for tonight was to store all the new bits in the garage and go to the club meet but one thing led to another and I ended up fitting the exhaust system. It was fairly straight forward apart from having to modify (cut & weld) the Y piece on the Fletcher LCB to line up with the Maniflow system but its all on now and looking good. And I still had time to pop into the club meet for a chat and a pint.......all in all a perfect evening.

It was all going so well today...... I got all the engine wiring, breathers and carb and manifold sorted then filled the rad with water and left it while I had a coffee. When I came back there was a pool of water from a steady, slow leak from the front of the head gasket under the plugs.......pooh.!!!! So I checked the torque on the head nuts..all OK so I removed the head but there was no water in the bores so I'm hoping its the gasket that's at fault. The gasket was a pattern set from CPI so this time I'll go for something better. The plan now is to check the head and block faces and then take it from there.

Managed to get a Payen head gasket from East Sussex Minors in Stonegate today after a phone call to Mick Gain of Gainspeed in St Leonards confirmed that the cheap gasket was probably at fault. I've fitted the new gasket and filled the block and head with coolant through the thermostat casting and left it overnight to check for more leaks. I measured the old gasket and the fire rings are 1.50mm thick but the copper rings which seal the waterways are 1.30mm thick,so they are 0.20mm thinner than the fire rings so will never seal the waterways.

Yep we managed to get the engine running today. Well happy. We needed to buy a new battery as the old one was tiny and I always like to have a decent size battery so went for a Varta 063 from Autolec for £56,a similar battery from Halfords was £77. We had a problem getting the fuel pump to draw fuel but sorted it by swapping to another pump. We managed to sort the Metro electronic distributor to work with the Mini loom,we also had the engine ticking over for a while and it didn't overheat.

We got more done today. We got the auto pedal box converted to manual by taking out the clutch pedal spacer and fitting a clutch pedal in its place and had the usual struggle fitting the clevis pin between the pedal and master cylinder then with Lewis working the pedal we bled the clutch. Then we fitted the throttle cable and 4 new fixing bolts for the brake calipers. The we reassembled the NSR radius arm with a new pin and negative camber bracket. Next weekend we will sort out the OSR radius arm and fit a set of poly exhaust mounts before dropping the car back on its wheels.
