I bloody hate cars !!!!
Some of you may remember that the Mini developed a mid-range missfire on the way to the Riviers Run last month, well I thought id fixed it by replacing the supply loom to the electronic distributor............oh no.....it returned with a vengance and was making the car undriveable between 2000-4000 rpm but was fine above that....
At first I thought it was the HT leads breaking down so I ordered 2metres of good old copper cored HT lead and some NGK waterproof plug caps and yesterday I replaced the old carbon cored leads.
A brief test drive showed no change...still miss firing.
What next???.....It must be the ballasted ignition coil breaking down under load.
So off I went to the Car Shop in Winston Crescent to see if they kept one.....they did,so back to the garage to fit it.
All fitted and wired up,turn the key....lots of wurr wurr but no bang bang.....hmmm now what??
I left the ignition on to check the 12v supply to it (which was fine) and noticed that there were sparks arcing between the coil body and its mounting bracket.......thats not right.
So I checked the coil and it was duff, there was an internal short between the windings and body causing the arcing and lack of sparks at the plugs.....back to the Car Shop I went.
I explained and showed him the problem but unfortunatley he didnt have another in stock so gave me a refund.
So where could I now get a coil on a saturday afternoon.....then I remebered the car accesory shop in Hailsham so off I went and they did have one in stock.
Back to the garage and new coil fitted, the car started first time but again the car still miss fired.
It was time to call it a day and get on the interweb and do some reseach, this is what I found...
My 1989 Mini was originally fitted a points distributor and a ballasted ignition coil
My 1986 Metro engine was originally fitted with an electronic ignition coil
When I fitted the Metro engine into the Mini I kept the electronic distributor so as to make the car more reliable.
The golden rule seems to be from what ive found on various Mini forums NEVER FIT A BALLASTED COIL TO AN ELECTRONIC IGNITION DISTRIBUTOR.
When I brought the coils from both shops they both never said there was a compatibility issue as they both refered to the same catalogue so its not theyre fault.
I checked in both the Mini and Metro Haynes manuals and both said there wasnt an issue.
So this morning I dug out the points distributor for the original 1000 auto engine (never throw anything away),cleaned and gapped the points, fitted it,timed it up and went for a drive
Bliss...missfire is gone...engine is smooth and pull without hesitation....and the rev counter has stopped impersonating a wind screen wiper and now rises and falls smoothly.
I bloody hate cars.....
