This poor old 998 in primer grey is struggling. I've just repairing the broken exhaust! The tail pipe snapped off at the rear mount. Its an excuse to fit a stage one on our next pay day. The car has been running hot so I thought lean. Out came the colour tune. First time I've ever used one - Wow they are fun. 47mpg and no over heating! But problems have persisted like in the wet, full choke sorts it out. So I looked at the HS2 carb spindles - They've got more play than a bus in a tunnel! Anyone got a single HS2 in good condition lying around? Ignition timing to look at next, oh and those drum brakes need adjusting too. Oh where did those summer evening go?

Dave, I'm using a timing strobe light..... I've got the bit that takes a feed off the ignition lead, but I've also got two more leads that are unmarked, Would that be a 12v supply and earth?
I can see a faint flash (Only just seen in the dark) but not the bright strobe flash I would expect from one I've borrowed before.

Here's the plan,
rebuild the HS4 or find a good Hiff38, steal Dave's spare 998 (Good time for a cam change), source an unleaded (stage 2/3 head), stage one kit, new dizzy and a rolling road.
Oh dear bungle ;D

Result - Had a day off to prep for the rolling road, was digging around in Mumsies Garage and found a HS4!! I've put it in and swapped the needles as it was fitted to a GT. The needle thats now spare has a shoulder then a point. The one that is still in the car is just a point. Is that right anyone? It works, it pulls like a train now. Daves engine next ;D

After a weekend of hell from the Duckling - there is light!
The 998 was going on the dyno, but after running perfect for 24hrs, it died at Hailsham. There is was abandoned. After some head scratching and more tweaking of the carb, Gary came to my rescue after dark.
He quickly spotted no sparking at the plugs. The cap, points and arm were all black and pitted..... Interestingly in the dark we spotted the coil arcing from the HT to the negative (-) terminal. Bit of scrubbing and a carb re-tweak and off we went home!
Sunday lead to the points, cap and arm been replaced. Out came the feeler gauges. Leads will have to wait until Xmas.
I've really got the hang of adjusting the carb, lifting the piston 1mm, listening for an increase or decrease in the RPM (Looking for none). The car now starts better than it ever as before, no cranking it over five times pumping the throttle. Just starts after turning the key. Perfect.
Fitted new key barrels, the screw driver from a desperate (or stupid) pikey failed to unlock the key barrels. Also it had been a lot of hassle with a key for each door. Minispeed did not include the air-fix instructions to remove the zinc plating and high spots from the key barrel casting. First one took and hour, following ones twice as quick.
Started the re-spray - slapped on some more grey primer ;D

There we go .... A immobilizer could pack up and leave you stranded without the starter motor even turning. After you have bought new batteries or had the remote replaced and coded at cost you have to get all the flippin sensors working and after all that .......... You find out its the clutch Mark 1 Minis : Slide window open , Gain access , Turn dash mounted ignition key , (no steering lock) Press button on floor . Scream off down the road with ya clock work points and fully laden with Italian gold ;D
