After having an enourmous amount of fun and some success on the Eastbourne and Ram Motor Club autotests this summer we have decided to build an Autotest Special just for handbraking around the cones next summer. A fairly good shell was obtained (Cheers Gaz) which has a fairly solid floorpan but is a bit rotten in most of the areas that will be chopped out... Got the car back to the workshop, and had some fun with the angle grinder.. The Duckling's old (slightly bent) front subframe has now been bolted up to the car to allow us to move it around, It's going to be fitted with a standard spec engine of our choosing (what ever is lying around in the workshop..). Rear subframe is shot, we may find another or go for coilovers at the back which will allow us to turn the remains of the existing suframe into a beam axle and lose a lot more weight from the back of the car. Fuel tank will be under the bonnet, along with a battery mounted in the scuttle somewhere.. This is roughly what it will look like,

looks like you are making a radford at the back,
shame it would not be road legal it would be fun to drive on the road
great power to weight ratio.

Did some more cutting today.. Sorry Simon! Got some steel tube and started to make up the bracing bars, also planning around the freebie coilovers destined for the back end. It means we can chop out even more metal by turning the back subframe into a beam axle.

I took a look today and found Paul with a demonic smile, ready to chop a bit more off (rather like a sort of Serial Grinder) and what's left of a once shiny new Mini, rapidly disappearing. It's a bit like Lego for grown ups really and will be huge fun for those two loons when it's done! Keep up the good work Paul! MMc.

how are you running the hand brake hydrolic ( spelling) or the normal cable,
as i can see you wearing out a few on the auto tests

Hydraulic is a possibility, not actually sure if it's needed though. I think a well adjusted standard system will be sufficient for now, especially for the grass events. plus it's free..

Been tinkering away slowly at this over the winter, the rear subframe came off and was converted into a beam axle seeing as we are using coil-overs at the back end. Radius arms have been treated to a rebuild with new bearings and bushes, brake back plates blasted and painted and reassembled onto the radius arms. Have welded a few more tubes in place for strength and to provide a top mount for the shocks. It'll be rolling again by the weekend and the rest of the car will be getting some attention, i.e., engine, brakes, fuel system, wiring etc!! Needs to be finished by the middle of May..
