Hi Folks
Mumsies open classic has had some fuse blowing gremlins for some time now, The in-line fuses had been recently replaced as they had near disintegrated. I fitted a new fuse box.
Today she was driving home in the rain and the wipers slowed down, with a hint of burnt plastic. She got home to find the fuse supplying the headlight relay was burnt along with the relay. The lights will not switch off!
I'm up for fitting a new loom. But before I do I'll change the relay, fuse holder etc and measure the current(amp) to check if its drawing to much. I'm expecting I wont find a problem as the car will of dried up by then.
Anyone got a gem of knowledge to add?
So far the cheapest loom is from Minispares and somerford 150pounds- I think I'll go for somerford for the quality

Could we not make a loom? Is there anywhere we could get patterns for a DIY job? Only a suggestion....

I think Mingie 2's loom is still in tact............just about There's not much left now

Is the loom spoken for then or is it readily available? We could check it over and see....not sure if there's a lot of difference between many mini looms, (i'm sure someone will tell me different though) but even just to have it as a pattern to copy for length, I could make one up at work.....just easier to have something more than just Mr Haynes's diagrams!

I have no idea whether it would be any good, but I am sure someone will know. Dave was interested in taking part of it.

with all due repect to Rachel and Mingie there is not much point replacing a used wiring loom with a used wiring loom that is even older than Mumsies .
When I rebuilt the MK1 I fitted a new wiring loom supplied by Autosparks . I wanted it modified and they were happy to accomodate extra wiring into the wrapped loom for heated front screen, cd player , and air horns enabling me to just fit the loom and not cut it about for adding the accesssories. I would try them , I think Martin is the bloke to talk to .
I will be getting them to supply a replacement modified loom for my Studio 2, I believe they are also supplying a new loom for MiniWorlds Cooper 35 le , Sputnik, while its at ML motorsport . They usually advertise in the mags although I have noticed they are not in the December issue of Miniworld .

Dave I am under no illusion as to the state of Mingie 2 ;D and was fairly confident that it wouldn't be much good for Mumsie, but if Josie can use it as a template she is welcome to have it Mingie 2 is taking up space on the drive and I am just trying to get rid of it bit by bit, no matter how small ;D

Thanks to everyone for their input with suggestions for my 'treasured' mini. It looks like Autosparks make to order? With Simon in 'Comunicado' (wherever that is) I'm getting confused with what to order and from where now. Would Somerford be the best? ?

Simon's had a word with Mumsie now & looks like a new one's getting ordered. I have offered to fit it though (with guidance of course) but Simon's not too keen...... I wonder why?! Maybe one day I will be allowed to do something on a car! Hopefully the new loom will do the job though, as you said Dave, there's no point in replacing with another second hand loom....although that wasnt the plan anyway. I'm thinking about taking the loom off you Rachel anyway as I think it would be good practice for me to see if I could make at least some parts of the loom, and hopefully understand it a bit more. (that's if Simon will let me have it in the house. ) I may be crap on the engine side of things but I should make the effort to know more about the electrical side at least! ;D

You hav'in a laugh.... is she hav'in a laugh!? ;D ;D I wouldn't entertain replacing the loom with a 2nd hand one. Mumsies my mum, its got to be a proper job. I've yet to get a multimeter to the current loom and find the fault, but whatever it is, the loom is burnt out, the in-line fuse holders were recently replaced with blade types etc etc. Its coming out. To repair the loom or copy would take some time and not feasible. Josie recently changed the wheels on my mini, striped down the hubs, unassembled the bottom arms and semi rebuilt it. And I'm sure if I have my traditional Victorian way, while i replace my mum's loom, Josie can cook a full English for me, clean the house, look pretty, then entertain my family with a lunch time five course meal... then wash up while I discuss world finance which she wouldn't understand ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
