Spent the afternoon on the BOC. Replaced the rather original looking and non effective shock absorbers. Fitted KYB self adjusting gas shocks. I've had the same type on the Balmoral for the last 30 thousand miles with great results. Found a couple of the brake pads down to 2mm, so replace the lot. ;D Noted a split CV boot on the O/S, which I'll have to sort next month Greased up the nipples, not before also noting a little play on the O/S top ball joint. Guess I'll be striping the complete drive train the O/S side then. Mum's engine has none of the usual oil leaks, all the seals and gaskets are great, but for the oil filter housing! A rather steady drip at that! The late carb and spi engines had rubber seals which perish. Sadly a previous mechanic tried to resolve this by over tightening the thread and stripping it. I only found that out after purchasing a rather expensive braided oil hose (Well mum did ;D). The thread didn't seal. Had another crack at that today, this time without the sealing washer to allow the fitting to use three turns of good thread further in and a good dollop of lock tight. Think its sorted. ;D Then I also noted the carb vac advance pipe was not connected. The darn rubber coupling has split. Just a small shopping list for mum

Tackled the O/S drive train today, CV, CV boot and both ball joints. Used some valve paste to 'lap' in the pin and nut. Very smooth. The vernier caliper purchased at IMM also really helped to know which size shims I was adding or removing. Also put a bit of wire wrapped around the rear exhaust mount to exhaust. That should stop the blo##y thing coming off again! All in under two hours. Steering coloum bush and rear brakes Thursday evening MOT soon after.

Spent a long evening taking off the steering column. Had to grind off that irritating sheer pin which supports the column. Grrr Stripped the column and fitted the new nylon bushes (Found at SMD for £2.50, rather than the rest of the traders at £4.50). Slapped it all back together... what a dog to get the steering rack and column bolt hole to line up!!! Back in with the steer bolt from my spares collection. The rattle and play in the column is all gone now. Great Ran out of time to adjust the handbrake to my autotest standard, but hopefully adjusted them enough for the MOT. Fingers crossed now.

A MOT pass! One tempermental side light bulb turned out to be a corroded connection. Was advised to improve the handbrake. Spent an evening stripping the rear drums, slacked off the hand brake cable, roughed up the shoes and drum face, assembled with copper slip, adjusted, adjusted the handbrake cable back up. My normal spec job for an autotest. And the darn O/S wheel still wont lock up!!! Guess some new shoes and a cable grease up is next. mumble mumble Think the new rubber shoes will go on at the same time.

Had a rather nice evening with Mumsie last night, cinema and food. Until the wipers stopped working along Eastbourne seafront! A midnight repair soon followed... The cable had snapped at the motor! One of the plastic fittings which goes through the bulkhead and the screw locks in place had fallen apart. So the motor wiper motor have be bouncing about straining the cable until failure. Luckily only last week I stripped the same plastic fitting off a car and placed it in my useful pot. Lucky that! All fixed and back on the road by 11pm, so much for an early night. The niggles list continues, the heater matrix must be silted up on one side and the fan squeals, new screen rubber to fit, the reverse lights are playing games and its due a wax oil. Oh the joys of keeping a mini as a daily drive! ;D

Bit of TLC over the last month for the BOC. Treated to those new brakeshoes and pads. Boy I wish I could use it for autotesting! The handbrake is perfect! Normal oil & filter change, coolant change. Darn vacuum pipes! The other two have split this time. Replaced and now she idles correctly. This time the other CV boot has split and the bottom ball joint was not funny. Stripped it down and replaced the ball joint, just re shimmed the top Jobie. Noted brown grease in the wheel bearing. Think the rear seal had failed, so stripped and degreased the wheel bearing, regreased, reassembled with new seals. Greased all the nipples! Not back for a long evening! Looks like new disks are in order... Sorry Mum. More bad news! Last year, not an oil leak... Now needs a new driveshaft seal, gearbox rod and crank pulley seal. Plus oil is coming out of the clutch bottom... guess a new clutch and clutch oil seal is in order to! That will be a day job in July Dave... could you bring your oil seal fitting tool to the club meet, I'll get you a beer for the rental? Guess I better get round to do that wind screen rubber and silver strips are past there best Fitted the MPI seats from my Balmoral (RIP) which looks in keeping with the BOC. Need to convince mum to get some yoko 539 tyres, a full respray and bobs you uncle, a very nice mini. Not bad for 70,000mile daily run around.

Merry xmas all!
Typical xmas wos, the BOC has thrown up an electrical fault. Fun one at that. The indicators work all nice and that till you use the brakes, then the indicators stop, and refuse to work again. All with the harards and heated rear windscreen.
Wiggle the 3-4 fuse connection on the fuse box and it bounces back to life. But I'm not convinced, maybe its a earth behind the dash. The brake light circuit must be feeding back into it... any other suggestions before I brave the frostbite? :-)

Bad news Mumsies BOC was rear ended today. She's ok, bit rattled but from what I've heard might be curtains for the shell. Fingers crossed not.

Oh Dear not good... there is a thread on what to do if your car gets damaged in the general section.
Good luck fighting the insurance company.

Cheers peeps, Mum's ok(ish). Uncomfortable whiplash sadly.
Car is with a garage which the recovery dropped it at. They are classic friendly and fighting the cause to replace the back panel. I'm sure it will be the normal write off and buy the car back game, but with the garage on side, it should be happy days. Might even be able to get the whole car resprayed to match up the front wings. :-)
