£230!! Minispares and Somerford by power of bulk will be cheaper than most Auto suppliers. Just got back from the Sunny Isle of Wight, I've got Josie cooking the evening feast. I've also pointed out my dirty smalls too ;D ;D Mumsies got an old skool Autoelecie to have a look this weekend to acess a repair, I'm still gunning to replace the whole loom. Mumsies's borrowing my convertable, (my mini's sprung so many leaks it might as well be), before my mini gets hidden in a garage for the winter. That takes the pressure off a quick fix.

Yep, Minispares it is. HAM4626 (88to92) or YMC11388 (Pre injection). Mum's has a side mounted fan.. which was introduced in 1990, so how can a loom from 1988 cover a model two years later..... I've check the VIN and the code is for pre the last batch before SPinjection, But I suspect it is the YMC job. I'll have a chat with the minispares geeks on Monday.
Mum got a sparkie to have a look, His repair is the same price as a new loom. Guess Josie will have my dirty overalls to clean next weekend.. ;D
The headlight relay had failed. The brown 12v supply had pulled a high current melting all the way to the starter solinod. I assume water had earthed the relay. Hence the lights staying on and the wipers slowing down due the current drain.
Before I take out the loom, I'll make sure it was the relay. Don't want to blow away a new loom.

Simon, you can' wait to get your car back, neither can I!
Autosparks are very very lucky I didn't phone them after the first fiasco!

first fiasco ? You mean there was 2 .
I feel a bit guilty although I know I should not really , but I did recommend them and order it for you . Having said we did send them the old loom as a pattern as requested . It was a long time from posting old loom to receiving the new loom , which I find hard to believe , especially as the wires were being cut for it when I phoned to confirm the arrival of the old loom as a pattern which was weeks before the new one turned up.
It does appear that wiring looms produced the time Rover were changing from carbs to injection are best described as a compromise of parts . Although that is no excuse for not looking at the pattern supplied. I think if a loom for a car produced earlier or later than this period was required the manufacturing of it would have been straight forward . I was certainly happy with my mk1 loom with mods I bought from Autosparks . That is why I recommended them.

I've got the loom 95% installed now. All the lights work apart from the interior light and side lights, hoping its just the bulbs. Just got to put a few wires in the right place for the coil and dizzy. I've two wires from the coil, white & white/black. Got them to their correct home. Its just the white wire from the loom. Bit of net research on its way! Hope to have the car running this week.

Its been 9 months since I've done any work on mum's car. An emergencu call from mum reporting poor run prompted me into action. I got the car for an evening last night. Replaced a rather spark eroded dizzy cap, ht leads, spark plugs and rotor arm. Checked the tappets and noted white gludge in the top of the rocker cover. So did a compression test all okay. Guess its due to no oil change in the last 9 months!! Noted a weep from the thermostat housing, so new gaskets went on there. No wonder the heater radiator is poor, the collant ready needs replacing, brown sludge was built up restricting the flow intio the heater rad. The car runs better now but for a stage one 1275 has not guts, so a booking into Gerald Dale is over due. Plus running cool at 1/4 which might explain the white sludge, the oil is not getting up to temperature to burn it all off.... A good service next week is planned, oil, filter, water and a new coil. Then to Gerald. Oh and maybe I'll look into the interior light thats not worked since I put the loom in back in March...

Thanks Shawn, got the multimeter out a quickly found no 12volt supply. The loom from autosparks didn't even have a wire to the fuse box.. Sorted. The passenger side door switch to earth was playing silly games so was cleaned up. The new coil went on and I set out the oil and water. Sadly Halfords have it wrong with the oil filter for the mini's 1990 to 1996. So a pre 1990 oil filter went on. The water was the interesting thing. I guess its not been changed for a while. Brown sludge every where. The heater rad is hot one side and cold the other so guess this sludge has not done it any favors. Guess I should of flushed out the coolant and ensured sufficient coolant to avoid this corrosion a long time ago. It was also leaking from the thermostat housing. The hoses had be simply clamped onto the coolant frosting/deposits that had built up. That was all scratched back to clean alloy. I'll flush it all out ago in a couple of weeks. The engine water temp has been at only 25% for the last few months so dropped in a new temperature sender and checked the thermostat in hot water. Initially in boiled water to open, then left the beaker in the sink of cold water. With a thermometer I checked to see that it closed at the temperature stamped on the thermostat. All OK. Guess the gauge is at fault.. or is the car running cold?? I cleaned up the oil feed into the filter housing and made the leak worse! Those rubber grommets that seal the connections had died. So I fitted a new braided hose which leaked just as bad. Where countless bodges had been carried out previously. The filter housing no longer has a new flat surface for the sealing washer to do its job. New filter housing next. So it was then taken to Gerald Dales Motor Sport to setup correctly on the rolling road. The car had been running very rich since the stage one kit was added a long time ago. The club dyno day showed a good peak performance but nothing under 4000rpm, the maximum rpm my mum every gets to! Gerald set the mixture and adjusted the dizzy over seven runs on the dyno. A quick run up the road and wow what a difference. The torque to accelerate away and over take is now there, and very much a pocket rocket!! ;D 70% or the max torque is now available at 2000rpm rather than the original 20%! Last night mum had the mini parked out side the pub she cooks at. About 9 a gent came in asking who's mini it was. Mum thought it was an admirer... sadly it was someone who reversed into the only car let only mini parked up in the car park News a new wing, front panel, head light, indicator and bumper. In order to do this work the other wing and 'a' will have to be done as the new panels cannot be welded to the 'nasty' O/S wing. Yet to have a look. As it was very low speed I can only hope the subframe and body have not been twisted/damaged. So...I need to get quotes for the repair. We know the insurance company will write it off for the value of the car (trade £400?). But with new wings the value of the car will be back upto £1900-£2500. So I look forward to arguing that! Any recommendations. I'm thinking Adrian (Jims friend), Fairlight Coachwork's (Dave's local), any others?
