I've had a great weekend working on my pride and joy.
Started Friday morning... Minispares had delivered my parts to my home address rather than work, while I was dropping Joise off at work, Mr DHL tried and failed to deliver to my empty house... Later that afternoon I managed to get the bits.
While waiting, I replaced my broken front subframe mounts, the two tear drops and a floor pan mount... so I did the rest as well. The tear drop mounts failed to fit.... dam cheap non genuine cr##. I've gone for poly rubber on the towers to improve the steering response, I've heard a lot more noise comes through but I didn't really notice. Steering is more responsive though!
Saturday, Off the Minispeed to get the some bits that minispares missed out from my order and some more tear drop mounts. Got done for speeding on the way.. (Serves me right ) Got home and found items missing from what I purchased from Minispeed, after an hour on the phone they found the items behind the counter, must of fallen off...
Started on stripping down the timing chain cover, found my crank bolt socket was missing Called Dave who came to the resue. ;D. Removed the chain and front plate. Started cleaning the faces to fit the new gaskets. On the block under the crank was some mastic... which I removed... along with the half moon oil seal (Now in four pieces) of which I had no spare , Bit of mastic and it went back in... , On went the chain etc etc, time to fit the new oil seal.... a seal from the clutch end does not fit the timing chain end . End of Saturday.
Sunday, Josie removed the bottom arms expiriencing the bang of ball joint tapers parting. Which I enjoyed watching ;D. Josie and I removed the pins from the arms, but the metal bushes had welded to the pin, and the hammer had damaged the studding. Replacement pins are in mind. A trip to Jim's scourced all the oil seals and gaskets required, off came the chain again, mastic etc and back on it all went with real seals fit for the job, a roast dinner and darkness ended play.
Monday, I the vain hope of a mini supplier with bottom arm pins might be open, I called around, I was please to find Minispeed were open, but after ten minutes on hold I guessed they had just forgotten to switch on the answer machine. Final checks of the chain etc lead to a manual rotation, then an engine run. Sounded good.
So off came the rear wheels, out came the fuel tank. Even after three hours, 'injections' hold a lot of fuel pressure in the fuel lines, I saw it, I felt it, Josie knew about it. >:(An eye wash later I was back in action..... To find corrosion is about to break through within 2cm of the rear subframe mount on the near side. . I finished putting on the shocks and refitted the tank.
That was it, on went the wheels, Josie was taught to adjust the hand brake/rear drums, bu##er it, it can wait untill October.... The MOT.
Life is good, Minis are ....., but they are worth it. ............. ;D
