I've noticed an increasing amount of 'blowing' from my exhaust recently. A trip to Stoneleigh Park on Easter Sunday with John & Alison sorted it.. ;D This was the main offender. A budget RC40 from Minispares. Its done proud over the last two years (30thou miles, Italian job etc etc.) The bottom of the box has a nice crack/long hole and its also gone at the top by the hanger! For a good price, I stole this from the Maniflow stand. Performance, looks, but without that 'phat' exhaust sound. Perfect. Much better!! Still blowing... at the knuckle joint!! So need one of them next! A trip to the tappets was interesting. They were all about 0.25mm... I didn't do them last time... So what were they set too?? Spark plug gaps were all astray, so set them all to 0.8mm gap. Oil is escaping from my last oil seal fix.. the timing cover. And the drive shaft pots are also dribbling... Oil leaks - Curse of the 'A' series!! ;D Just for Mpi Dan Mpi alternators are £120... and are not in stock! Anyone know a good source for a rotary coupler? Think I broke mine.. horn buttons on the steering column don't work and the air bag failure light is up...

go to bridges and take a look in the freelanders they are all the same kit air bags steering wheels and controlls , some rover 100/200/400/600 series cars too have the same stuff , alternators can be cross referenced at bridges also , they will tell you what other cars have the same alternator all you may need to do is get the pully nut gunned off and change for your one ( i have nut gun ). hope this helps shawn

Its got a higher charging rating and the multi groove belt pulley.
Investigating other Rover Car donors at the moment.

Never seen a budget RC40 . That is the beautty of the RC40 it is excellent value and the best flowing exhaust on the market to around 100bhp or so. . Looks like a excuse to spend money to me . That small split can be welded up. ;D The maniflow looks longer than the RC40 you done away with the cat ? Alternators . Phone Autolec in Newhaven 01273 514668 , speak to Fred and ask him how much . Ask for the price of a Valeo one . As a garage we were getting Quinten Hazell make electrics which was a good make ...... once but they pack up immediately . Valeo stuff is fitted to various makes of new car so top quality . Or Phone AJAY limited 01273 600560 , we also use them at work . They will supply Delco Remy products . Delco were to Vauxhall like Lucas to Austin Rover so again good bits of kit . or Phone Lucas in Brighton cannot remember the number now Sure there is a Rover or Lucas part number on your old alternator so if you phone someone up quote that as a cross referance . As with all things you get what you pay for . d

Don't worry Dave, I'll be saving the RC40 to patch up. Its done me proud. But after a taking a bit of a slagging off from Brooklands felt a little be more Base was required. No, left in the Cat, will not lose than, even for the blower, there's only a little restriction until 100bhp.
May put the RC40 back on for Riveria... Its a long way ;D
Alternators - Will explore the avenues for interest. I'm sorted, had a spare for a year now which I Lent to a desperate SMOC member recently. I will convert him to EDMC! ;D ;D
Ebay sorted out my rotary coupler. ;D
Engine inspection report to follow.

Well..... the engine is out... Nice having all/most the right tools! And Paul's wonder gun really doubled the pace!! Cheers 'Smoc' Dan for your afternoon help. I was right... ish. The cam looks good. The followers don't. The don't look well at all!! The cam bearings look scratched up next to the oil pump, the pumps a mess in side. The new-ish cam is a good fit along with a set of followers and a new oil pump. I almost kept to the schedule but didn't have the engine fully rebuilt in time by the end of play.... I'm out of time. Matilda will take us to the Riviera again So to be realistic, thats the Balmoral off the road for at least a month. Think I'll just get the block rebuilt and send the car off to get the body work sorted. Time it was done. So that could see the car off the road for most of the summer Time to think about the duckling then...
