quick update, got block back today, ouch!!!!!!!! new crankshaft bearings, cam bearings, main bearings, rings, thrust plate, shells etc etc total rebuild. gonna be a busy boy this weekend as got to get gilbert ready for brooklands next week. dont think ill bother to wash him though, it would seem this was all caused by the oil pump failing and mike at sussex engines thinks the damage may have been caused BEFORE i put the engine in

Just a quick one... have you checked your gearbox whilst its out? Most the time those broken down components are the remains of the gearbox mainshaft bearing cages. Also a good time to check your diff pin. Would be a shame to feed more metal into your new oil pump after all your work :-)

it was going so well, we got it running pretty much stop on, it drove good in 1st --- 3rd, did not flat spot or bog down pulled nicely up the hills round tels in 3rd,
good news that its not 2nd that gear has gone, so no big pay out for a new gearbox
but its still coning out to fix the diff cover,
your get there tel. your be able to see the light soon!!!!!

im sure it will come as no surprise that gilbert will not be making it to brooklands!! yep very dissapointed, everything is back together but now running like a bag of poo, cant realy understand it as last week it sounded sweet when dean and i took it out, except no 2nd gear now its backfiring so needs sorting. dont worry dean ill let you have the weekend off.so we will still be going, but in the sidewalk, which of course has no bling bling on it,nor will it have

Matt im wondering if you have put the earth cable back on to make it run bad like that ,common mistake or if youve reuused the inlet exhaust manifold gasket maybe letting in air leak or even loose nuts on manifolds ,,,vac adv retard pipe off or split rubber union ? good to see you today after a long time no see good luck with the motor.

hit the nail on the head shaun. manifold gasket leaking due to stud unwinding when last removed and then not tightening back down properly. seems to be running ok now but not been out yet as have a little welding to be done and a couple of other little bits..can anyone tell me if it is possible to test wether speedo is working without actually driving the car?what i mean is if the car is on axel stands and engine running in gear, will speedo work or does the car need to be under load if you know what i mean
