yes you can just plumb a return pipe into the tank but it needs to be high up above the level of fuel or it will not work properly... I guess you could even plumb it in above the tank into the long filler neck N.

You will need a return . I guess you could plumb it into the van tank .
Personally I would want to keep the van tank in its standard position but not many people realise that in the early 60's the fuel tank was a upright type like a saloon one and it was fitted in a similar position to a saloon one . So .......would it be a good idea to fit a injected saloon fuel tank ?
The fuel pump and tank sender unit is combined , fitted in the top of the tank with flow and return take offs built onto the top of the pump . Give me a shout when your putting engine in , happy to give a hand . Cannot do weekends tho as building up a old Mini with a Nissan engine in to be ready for Riv Run ;D

I've seen a couple of conversions where the MPi pump is grafted on top of the estate fuel tank. Not something I'd do myself though, maybe ask a pro welder like Alan Stone over at SLS in Hailsham to have a go...
The early fuel tank was very slim in comparison, you wouldn't want an injection tank in there really- bit bulky.

if it was me i would weld a return hose to the estate tank as it under the car, out the way, plus you dont use the space up in the boot.
but take it off empty it out of petrol fill will water to you get rid of all the gases, empty the water out and work out where you want the the return hose and weld in on,
then run a electric fuel pump, some thing like a su pump,or fasit,

i used my standard tank with my injection kit, i didn't weld a return to it instead i used an 8mm fuel pump union drilled a 10mm hole in the top of the tank (used some grease to help catch the metal filings when drilling) took the sender unit out used a nylock nut on a socket and extention bar through the sender hole and i used a fibre washer with a rubber oring to make it leak tight. done the job as i didn't have a welder available. also another thing i done with sender removed i used a long flat head screw driver to remove the nylon filter that sits on the pick up pipe inside the tank (dunno if estates have them) apparently its quite restrictive for injection engines (so vmax told me) makes sense as you use a diffrent type of fuel filter with the injection. matt
