Well, heres the damage after my gearbox failure at Brighton last week, as i thought the diff was the culprit, four teeth missing from the output gears. So far i've found two of the teeth, I think one other was pulverised by the crown wheel consequently punching a hole through the diff housing, the fourth tooth is still unaccounted for..... Managed to source another remote box through a wanted ad on minifinity, will inspect and fit that for now and rebuild my box slow time (with the help of someone who can weld ally casings!). The engine seems in fine fettle, the oil pump shows very minor scoring and the straight cut drops seem excellent so just a bit of a clean up, new gaskets and a new water pump for the donk. heres some photos

It must of been the extra load of 12 cans of lager and your orange juice that was no much for your diff.
Interesting though, its normally the pin that fails on the diff.

thats pretty bad, how old is that diff and where did it comes from? I suppose the extra strength of the 4 pin was too much for the teeth... lock it up!!!! or stick an LSD in there

Autopsy result; Cause of death; Excessively worn diff pin allowed too much play for planet gears, which in turn caused shock loading to strip four teeth from output shaft gears. Loose teeth in turn caught on crownwheel damaging one tooth and then getting caught between crownwheel and casing, causing casing to be ruptured and gearbox to consequently bleed to death. Contributing Factors; Smoking (tyres) 105 Bhp Right Foot too heavy Simon in car

so your not keeping the straight cut,
has this one got a x pin diff, if so you better buy shares in a tyre company as there will be no stoppping you spinning them up as you will not blow thw diff this time.

yeah, keeping straight cut drops, got to swap them into the new box. Not a cross pin in this box but have enough bits to rebuild my old box with a view to fitting a cross pin diff on that one so at least if i lunch the new box I will have a spare ready to be fitted!

managed to make a good box out this lot, enough bits left to build another as a spare!
