Maybe one for dave this, do you need to run a cat coverter on a 2litre redtop mini? Someone wants to buy one off the vectra we are breaking, don't want to sell it if its needed. Not sure where the MOT rules stand on this one

will need to double check. As far as I aware the emissions are still checked acccording to the test applicable for the age of car .
1992 K reg onwards cars need a cat .
I could put any engine I like in my mark 1 and still only need a visual check of the exhaust emmissions . Therefore I wont need a cat .
If I wanted to put the mk1's 1340 into a 97 Cooper it would need a cat . Although it would still fail the MOT emissions anyway as it wont have all the other bits that work with the cat , ie ecu , injection etc .
So basically ....
92 onwards engines into pre 92 cars ok pre 92 engines in post 92 cars need cats and more ....
Used Cats are worth a few bob at the moment , so much so that I have heard peole have been cutting them off cars at long stay airport car parks .
Dont throw them away . At work we are getting £30-£40 for a used cat providing the internals have not broken up.

Sorry Monkeyjim, but thats wrong. as long as you can prove that the engine is pre 92 no matter what age of car you do not need a cat. I run a 1997 Skoda's with a 1980's engines and no cat is required (also they still manage to pass the emmisions easily which I find strange? ??
