firstly you need to make sure your ignition components are in good condition, i.e. new dizzy, points(if fitted), condensor and ignition leads. This should cost a little over £20 to do if you buy the bits at the right place and can fit them yourself! The next thing is some sort of splash shield in front of the ignition components in the engine bay. The later minis came with one of these as standard, yours may well have had one fitted but lost it! They are fairly cheap second hand, i expect the normal mini parts suppliers could supply you with one also. Alternatively you can make some sort of shield up yourself out of an old plastic tub or similar, tywrap it to the inside of the grill, not pretty, but cheap and effective. Good Luck!

yep, sounds like the car just needs a bit of attention to the ignition components. The shield is fairly effective when fitted, try autolec in eastbourne for the bits, they are normally fairly cheap.

I had much the same difficulties last last year.
A few new bits as Paul suggested, one haynes manual and a free afternoon. All sorted.
The water shield helps, but water will spray around it. The easy quick fix is WD40 all the spark plug connections and off you go, for one mile or two.

My Mark 1 has had a sandwich box lid down its pants for 4 years and not suffered damp once ;D
Not even in the torrential rain we get on way back from Brooklands every year . New points, condensor , leads , plugs, good wiring connections and a new coil if the old one has been on there a long time is a reasonably cheap way to agro free Mini ignition systems ..... as everyone else has already said
