Hello once again! I Have now removed my 1098 Engine from my Moke, and have taken off of the cylinder head, Oil Filter, Pot Joints(part of the driveshaft, they were in a bad way), the 2 inspection plates from the rear. I have turned the engine from the crank shaft and the piston cylinders all seem smooth. I am concidering Checking/taking apart the Clutch and taking off the Gearbox as a unit and swelling some petrol round it to clean it and inspect the gears, however several people have told me not to bother as thse 2 jobs are lot of work, and others say as the engine is out you may aswell do it. The engine hasnt been fired up in about 15 years, and the Cylinder head has cracked.
So i was wondering what you guys think i should check on the engine, and the bay, before i put her back?
Also The Rubber Cone Springs in the suspension, will they need replacing?? or if they look alright\how do i test i wont have to bother? Kindest Regards Alastair

if you put it in and the clutch goes you will have to get the engine out again to change it so it is a good idea to do it, and the oil seal behind if that leaks ( well it speaks for itself, clutch -oil do not mix) another one is the water pump as that is arse to when its in the car
maybe no an idea to put petrol om your gears because you will have to wash it all out again which then means putting water al over it, best to drain it and remove any bits but keep it clean give it a go see if it runs or not you could have it in tested and out in a weekend, but its a bit of a pain if you put it in and it does not work and you have to get it back out
or
, if the head is cracked the engine must of done some work, best to total strip it and reconditon it, bearing, mains and big ends, piston ring, check bores may get away with rehoning if not a rebore, check to crank if its more than 0.10" out of where the rods fit it will need a regrind, you will have to get another head , try to find one that is the same , clean it and recut the seat, and have an unleaded convertion done if it has not been done already
i would do the above
the suspention, have a good look at them, is the car sitting lower on one side,(normal drivers side) are the cones very worn perished and ripped if so change them, i have the tool if you want to borrow it, it may be a good idea if it has been sitting for a long time
hope this helps
