Hey all! I have a Mini Moke, with an unoriginal Engine inside, i was reliably told it was a 1275GT and there is an old MOT certificate confirming this,
HOWEVER i have looked at the engine number, on the plate below the thermostat, and it reads: 10h791aa135455 and am i wrong in saying that indicates a 1098 High Compression? and is 79, 1979? I Would be greatfull if someone could translate my engine number, as it needs a new cylinder head and various other work done to it!! Many thanks Alastair

a 1098 is based on the 998 . My first port of call would be AC Dodd the engine builder at ML motorsport in kent . AC spent last club meet with us and he is certainly the guy to talk to about all A series stuff . Would think AC would modify your own head , will need to have some idea of complete engine spec for him to work to. www.mlmotorsport.com , the website had been vandalised but there is a business contact number on screen . I do have AC's own number if you are seroiusly interested .pm me to let me know infact he was talking to a club member about tuning the 1098 ;D in general the 850s have 85h engine numbers 998s are 99h 1098s 10h 1275s are 12h

Wow thank you so much for all that information it is greatly appreciated! I was wondering, and this maybe a silly idea, but if you said the 1098 was based on the 998, does that mean they will take the Cylinder head? it doesn't sound right to me due to position of bolts etc, but just in case im being crazy i thought i would ask!

unless you hgot 11 stud s head on there now the bolts should be same .
see calvers notes on cylinder heads and tuning the 1098 on minispares site . other than that speak to AC.

I'll have a look tomorrow. I rang up Mini Spares and they informed me i could just whack a 998cc Head on it. all he said is that the inlet valves are smaller, and there maybe a slight reduction in performance! what does anyone make of that?? If i stage 1 the engine, i'm sure I'll regain all that performance!

A alternative source of info could be Keith Calver, hes the technical chap on the minispres site and in Minimag , biulds and races himself . He will read emails and replies really quickly to questions . He has his own site away from Minispares. www.calverst.comWould stick with AC for building and info though.

If i stage 1 the engine, i'm sure I'll regain all that performance! A stage one kit & a rolling road setup or a experienced hand at picking the right needle and ignition setup etc would make it up. Gerald made a 66% increase to my 998! (34 to 50Bhp!)

bit pointless putting a head on it that drops power and needing something else to push it up again .
the contact details for those in the know are already on here to help.

Yer i know what you mean, but its all a matter of cost at the moment, my restoration job is escalating in cost. I have a friend who is willing to give me his cylinder Head Cheaply. Thanks again for everyones help and details, i will be talking to the relevant people. Out of interest has anyone here got one of those Stage 2 or 3 Cylinder Heads from Mini Sport?
Regards and Thanks again
