no , de-adjust the drums, wiz em off , check the wheel cylinders are not leaking or seized , de-dust , stick em back on and adjust them up again . Oh dont forget to make sure the handbrake cable and the quadrants on the back plate and radius arm are not seized . Recon even at home a rear brake service like that will only take half hour .

As a MOT tester I can say that a vehicles brakes can pass a MOT , only to find whilst carrying out a service immediately after that there are components found in the rear brakes requiring work. Rear brake performance can be perfect , because you do not remove the drums and check brake lining thickness during a mot you have no idea that the vehicle that you have just passed only has 1mm of lining left on the rear brake shoes . The MOT is a basic safety check , and it relates to the condition of the vehicle at time of test. MOT'd a 1971 Beetle today . Done a few hundred miles since last year , and is garaged . Last year it had new front wheel cylinders fitted to gain a MOT certificate . This year it failed again on the front brakes and its only done a few hundred miles . Just because a car has a recent MOT does not mean there is nothing wrong with it . 20 Years in the trade has taught me that. D
