which carb is a better carb to have in terms of setting up and perfomance. is it the HIF or the older ones. im swaying towards the older ones due to simplicity. thoughts??

Injection!!! Get an emerald ECU or fit a megajolt!! ;D I can here jerring already But the first question is what engine do you have? A standard 998 or 1275? As a very rough guide..... Standard 998 - 1 1/4" SU Pepped up 998 - Twin SU 1 1/4" SU Standard 1275 - 1 3/4" SU or HIFF 38. Pepped up 998 - HIFF 48 or Twin SU 1 1/2" SU There are so many options, as a rule of thumb, the airflow through the carb needs to be a good speed, so slapping a full webber system onto a standard 998 would not work, the 998 would not pull the air through the carb fast enough to be effective. Massive webbers work well on a overbored 1275 and high revs and full throttle. Define your engine spec and then your can find the best carb for the job. Your engine is the performance, the carb just feeds the fuel and air ready to burn.

stick with an 1" 1/2 on a 998 or twin 1" 1/4s
single 1" 1/4 is only realy enough for an 850
1"3/4 or twin 1" 1/2s for a 1275
thats my advice anyway

I agree with all those reccomendations, but my point stands.
Define the engine spec, then pick a carb to suit its engine capabilty and your driving style (daily drive, weekend warrior or track day special)
Chatting to a professional like Gerald Dale would be best.

Just to complicate things isint the HIF 44 the same as a HS6 (1 1/4") accept the HS is imperial and has the float chamber on the side, and isint the HIF 38 same as HS4 etc. etc. If possible i would go for the metro version the HIF as it is a more modern design and has no external float chamer Anyway just my 2p's worth N :-)

Ops sorry that should be: - HIF44 = HS6 1 3/4 HIF38 = HS4 1 1/4 HIF44: - Twin HS6: - Both are the same size diameter just the HIF is metric of a Metro or Rover Cooper the HS is older and imperial and has that float chamber on the outside. N :-)

Ops just noticed the pics are taken from differnet sides but they essentally use the same manifold too it just the HS only uses the 2 diagonal bolts and the HIF uses all four.
