black smoke

Shawn have you come across the following .

Got a 1275 carbed 'n' cat auto 1995 in wednesday for running probs..
Had a brief look at while it was in for the exhaust front pipe last week.
It will suddenly pop back through the carb and dense black smoke comes out the back , try and rev it and it pops back .
After a while it will just clear itself ? Its absolutely gutless .

As I said not had a look at it really because it was only in for a exhaust last week but I did have time to put a set of new plugs in as one was out . Not checked anything else yet such as timing CO etc .

Any ideas of the top of your head.

clogged cat? if the mixture is out on the carb it could have sooted up the cat, i put a stage one kit on a carb/cat mini once(m reg auto), the cat looked like chimney and it was gutless before the stage one went on, went like a different car after. too much back pressure could be causing the blow backs. Cats are all very well on an injected car with lambda control but i think fairly ridiculous with a carb.

yeah it sounds like its too rich and have a look in the dash pot sounds like it could be dry as a bone , also could be a rubber pipe type air leak with the gutless problem and someones people rich it up to compensate ?

realised what the problem was when I shut the computer down after putting up the post ;D

First thing this morning I went straight to the air filter and replaced it. It was black
Did say I had not had the time to look into it .


as I said i replaced the broken front pipe , the crack in it was filling the air filter up with soot . The owner does local runs round Saltdean and its on the choke a lot .
