Hi there, need some help with my wiring to install a cd player to my mini. Basically all i have got is two red wires coming from the engine and a black earth wire and thats it !!! The other wires behind the dash are the left and right speaker wiring and ariel lead. Im hoping to get a Pioneer head unit next month. What are the two red wires and what needs to be linked upto the IOS lead that comes with the head unit!?! Ant

hi ant , well its not that simple , if you only have a head unit (a front pannel with a socket in the back or a long lead in it ) then he wring will need to be done where ever the remote part of the unit lives . if by refering to a head unit you are talking about a stanard din sized unit then it also requires a little more info as manufacturers have many different ways and colours to be wired to your vehicle , the best thing to do is get someone in the know to do the job with the right test equipment , this will prevent you from blowing your dream peice of kit up and believe me you dont want a repiar bill for a set with burnt out multi layered pcb tracks , vaporised surface mount components and hard to get hold of intergrated circuits (chips). give us a call 611355.

no i disagree, it is quite easy and all stereo manufacturers use the same colour coding on their looms. The fuse will blow in the h/u if you make a mistake and h/us can be repaired relatively cheaply (altho im not recommending you break it!!!)
when you buy the unit you will get a ISO lead with a standard connector on the end, whichever headunit you buy. Get a multimeter on the leads to test which is the ignition turn on and which one is the permanent live. Then purchase yourself an open ended ISO lead, connecting the yellow cable to the permanent live and the red to the ignition. Use bullet connectors and automated crimpers, placing the female end to the car side.
Speaker leads will need to be connected accordingly. Then its plug and play!
If you are in doubt give me a call tomorrow at work on 01323 500555 and i can talk you through it. best bet is to disconnect the battery after testing for the ignition turn on to avoid troubles, (burnt wiring loom in corsa last year by a colleage cost £1200 to sort on halfords insurance!)

Wires in a 1989 mini. I guess one red is your permeant supply and the other in the ignition only supply.
A poor installation of wiring... It looks like it DIY rather than the standard rover....
