depending on the milage the engine has done it could be a couple of things 1) not milage dependant but have you over filled it with oil ? this problem is not unusual loads of people have done it . 2) valve guide oil seals and or psiton rings .wear and tear but repairable .

Many a series engines go well past 100thou with now problem. Yes a rebuild of low mileage engine off ebay will give you a smoother running engine with maybe almost twice the power you currently have.
Before you start doing all that! Get together with Minihaven or drop intio Gerald Dale Motor Sport in Ninfiled. It may just need a cylinder head refurb or a little TLC to get you a resonoble running.
To cheapest option with the best reliablilty would be a 100pound ebay metro engine with less than 40thou on it. This would be my option unless you could afford 500 to one billon dollars for a engine rebuild by Gerald Dale
A lot of cost saving can be done with a haynes manual, dirty hands and a forum ;D

hi lisa,my metro 1275 engine was doing the first thing in the morning smoking, then cleared after a couple of mines running, i to came to the conclusion that the valve guide rubbers were worn, they get hard over time due to the heat of the engin,by the way it smoked qwite bad first thing,it was getting embarrising esp if you were at a show,BUT IT WAS QUEREABLE,GERELD DALE HAS A SPECIAL TOOL IN HIS WORKSHOP,done it without taking the head of.it costed about 30 quid, he will recommend you fit them also on the exzaust valves as well,as for your other intermittent missing and running of now and then,if you have points these need regular checking and regaping to 14-16 thou ,the best feeler gauge on the market is the old piece of cornflake packet, its the right thickness,i dont have this problem anymore since converting to electronic ignition, get one of a old metro, but you must take the coil as well as it runs continuousely at 12v,and run a live perminent feed directly from fusebox that gets switched of when you turn off the ignition, you could also check your dashpot oil level and make sure the oil is not to thin as this will make the plunger open to quickly and tend to flud the engin depending on if you are booting it,it will show up then, but if you are poodling about it will not be so noticable, hope this helps, have a word with me when you see me next, its good to see a young lady prepaired to get hewr hands dirty.bill
