hi all, i hav almost completed my project. it now fires up and runs. however i tryed to reverse it back into the garage and it would not engage the reverse gear. it made a high speed grinding sound. which i thought that the clutch was not operating properly. however it went into first gear when i drove it out of the garage. with out making any noise. any suggestions? matt.

will it go into thrid ? if it does ,does the gear stick feel as if it needs to go further than it has ? check the easy stuff first make sure the pins in the linkage are all present and correctly fitted , also check the gearstick steady bar bolt where it bolts thur the gear box case casting .also another thing to look at is the two rubbers on the end of the gear remote where it all bolts to the floor by the handbrake. hi shawn, i jack the car up today and had alook. the linkage is all solid underneath no slackk, the rubber mounts are fine. however the gear stick does feel realy loose and you dont feel any resistance when goining in and out of some gears. so i decided to try it out running whilst jacked up. again it went into 1st but wasnst posative performance. it didnt go into 2nd or 3rd or 4th or reverse, when i put the car into reverse and then lift the clutch and accelerate slightly you could see the gear lever pop out of the gear. i was goin to try swop my linkage over for the one on my blue and white car to see if it would make a diffrance but i cudn't get the roll pins out, do u have a tool for this that i could borrow? does it sound like its the linkage to you? or is it the gears them self? its so annoying cos thats alll that needs doin to it before it can go into be m.o.t'd lol cheers matt

retry setting up your clutch adjustment , i had the same problem on my engine once but could not get 1st or 2nd because i had the clutch set up wrong. once i had it about right i got my local little garage so set it properly( like its a mini friendly garage) and it only cost a few quid
go back and re set everything and make sure you have it set right

ok i agree with dean try the little things you can do first check the adjustment if you cant set it up due to adjustment then it looks like the engine might haver to come out and change the box sorry to say mate !. now adjustment meand the travel allowed in the main pinion in the clutch end casing , these are known to become siezed due to electrolisis but it has been known that the end throw stop adjustment knut to be done up too far , it only requires a few thou difference to make a difference so slacken it off a little and see if it makes a chage to your plight .
