Josie's 998, leaded with 84 thou on the clock,
shes a bit@# to start, but idles and cruises okay, but when under load of acceleration it misfires or hesitates, like when pulling out of a junction. I think it's only on one cylinder as it still accelerates through it.
Cap, points replaced in April, vacuum advance seem all okay, plugs all the grey/brown okay colour. Tappets rattle a lot when cold.. the leads I'll replace on the weekend.
Thinking the lack of lead might of started the valve seat wear.
Any suggestions?

it sound to me its time for a rebuild the carb is proberly due one to, that will not help if its worn.
or just get hold of a second hand engine in good nick , low milage. if you can hear and see it runing it would be good

Si, I dont think that it will be a lack of lead yet, I managed to get my leadded 998 from 25K to 56K on UL petrol. when I took the head off at 56K there was no wear showing at all. why dont you get that stage 1 kit fitted and then they will fix it for you on the rolling road. you could always get a stage III & roller rockers fitted at the same time to eliminate the valve ware problem too N

Josie wants to wait till she had it resprayed before the stage one and the artilcle..
Changed the leads and cap and its made a big difference, but the underlying fault is still there. I've another leaded head which has been ported i'll drop in there. Will that make much differance to its carb tuning?

Ah yes but your forgetting Si has bought a rather expensive stage one kit from MiniSpeed that includes a magazine feature, fitting and a rolling road tune up. But it was all spent in aid of charity really At one point he was bidding against me N

Check the basics again first Si, April was a while ago, the points gap might be slightly out. Dave

try setting the dwell angle and reset timing you can't fit points without re-dwell

All is well with the little motor - ish.. I replaced the leads, cap and rotor arm. I did the dwell and points in April. Starts first time and goes well!! ;D So fresh plugs soon followed! The olds were a way to long!! Must of been for the wrong car. But the engine cuts out when pulling up. Vacuum not doing its job??

monkeyjim got it right, allways go back to basics, do rough points gap then do it all from dwell
