As a tester i do sometimes feel that customers think we fail there car on purpose just to get a job out of it. That is not the case, believe you me i do not want to fail a peugeot 309 on front to rear brake pipes unless i really have to cos replacing them round the fuel tank is a sh*it , if i were to let them go the thought of a rusty pipe bursting under braking does not bear thinking about. The mot test is there to ensure the vehicle is upto minimum standard to be on the road, there is a safety issue involved. Unfortunately some people would rather spend money down the pub on cigs and beer instead of getting the brake pads replaced, but thats cars for you, customers need shoe horning out of the things but will not spend money on them , then its the mechanics fault when it fails its mot. You are allowed to see the mot inspection manual , so if the car fails on something you are not happy about or you just want advice if you ask the tester he will go through the testable item in question in the manual with you. Dave , your friendly mot tester . No I am not doing all the clubs Minis. ;D

Hi Thanks for the info Monkeyjim. Gives me a little more confidence taking my wee motor into a garage. Few bad experiences.........eg. Garage asking if i would sell my car. NO! One MOT failure later (a min. of £600 welding according to them, amongst other things) the next thing they asked was........again.......would i sell it to them!!!!!!!!!! Wont go into the full saga. I'm not compaining about them finding holes that need welding......helps me to sort them before they get any worse.....or my feet hang out of the bottom of the car!!! ;D It would just be nice if there was some consistency. sam , unfortunately some of the mot is down to the individual tester, if a bulb is not working that is clearly a failure but one testers slight free play in the suspension is anothers excessive free play. There is no consistency. dave
