I've got one now!!! Think its the front shocks (knocks when going over the bumps..)
Can we all go is this knocking mini, all place bets on what the noise is and dish out 80% to the winners? 20% to the Italian job... team58...

Si , I suggest checking wheel nuts then jacking it up and looking for excessive play in the swivels, it is quite likely to be a bit of play but excessive play is what I would be looking for as a mot tester and mini mechanic. A small amount of play will go if you grease the swivels believe it or not . Also check the suspension arms and bushes for security and or deteriation plus check the shock absorber top and bottom fixings and the bushes. Its possible that a rubber bush has deteriorated so bad that metal bush inside it is touching the metal of the shock body or the bush has deterirated so it effectively rattles around in the metal causing the noise when the gap between the metal and bush is taken up.. Actually have a look under the car before the car is jacked up as this is the natural position of the suspension, jacking it up moves it all into a differant position. Subframe mounts may be a problem but i have not come across a noise caused by knackered subframe mounts, in fact when i took the front subframe out of my Studio 2 the other week i found all the engine and front subframe rear mounts were split in 2! Had no knocking noise from them though. The front and rear mounts can split in 2 when the rubber bonding becomes detatched from the metal. anyway your not daft think methodically and i am sure u will find it. see you in the morning dave

as we r on the subject of knocking.ive got one that ive been trying to eliminate 4 some time myself, some times its a process of ilimination, renewing worn parts as you go until you come across the problem that has haunted you ,and unbeknown you notice that it has gone, but the thing u learn by this method is when you come across the problem again you definatly know whats causing it, lol lol. so if anyone would like to make any idears that they think it is i would b most gratful. the symtems are, there is a sharp crack noise when i brake, its not that load either so im not to worried at the mo but it is getting more prominant as time go on,things that ive checked and renewed as a matter of cause,by the way the noise semms to be comming from the left hand side down by the passenger foot area, ive taken up all the play in the top and bottom ball joints both sides checked all the front mounting on sub frames,i had a new stering rack fitted 3 months ago,but ive checked the u bolts that support it and they are nice and tight, renewed track rod ends, checked calipers that are tight ,wheel bearings do not have excessive wear put new up rated tye bars on ,i personly think its something to do with the top surspention on the passengers side ,ive fitted high/lows on front 2 years ago and checked them out, nice and tight,so until it jumps out and bites me i will persevier with my checking as a ongoing maintainance,we all should b doing this any way as a precausion, ive just spent the last 3 days doing work on rachels car to get it through its MOT,the alarming thing i discovered that was not on the failer cetificate ,after doing everything that the car had failed on the failer certificate,i foung a further 4 things that i would not have passed if i was the MOT inspector.but thats another story.so to summerise, continual inspecting and maintaining your MINI will lern you a lot,and save you a lot of money,as you discover how to do it your self, with our help from the forum, thats what i like to think why i got involved with the club for.billyboy

its your rear number plate, i recommend removing the screws that hold it on and fix it with double sided tape instead. Seriously , i will have a think whilst i am under the studio 2 sorting out the rattly bits on that. all of which is tight, new subframe and engine mounts , everything tight. the only recent thing i have done is the hi los and and konis, the konis were on the mk1 they were ok on that so i think i can eliminate those. it sounds to be coming from the front strut/hi lo area of the subframe to inboard to be at the wheel end of the front suspension and not high enough to be top subframe mount bolt loose which would cause the subframe to move up and down over certain crashing pot holes.. dave

Yeah - all that knocking stressed my throttle cable - it gave up just past tonbridge when i was blasting the back roads, wedged the throttle at 4500rpm, 90mph down the hills - 10 mph up the hills... I'll use 2x1 next time! Or fit 13" wheels and rattle my car back together ;D

Found it!!! Broken engine stabilizer! The mount on the bulkhead, the bottom plate has come off. Guess I'll would have to drop the engine and weld in a new plate. Rather than drop the engine etc has anyone tried a ultimate engine steady in its place? I've used one to compliment the original stabilizer but not on it's own. Si
