All the markings on the block are just standard marking from when it the blocks were cast.
The plate over the fuel pump hole can come off and you can put the black spacer and mechanical fuel pump there. You could use the one off the auto engine. They blanked it off because they used a electric pump.
The plate on the back of the gearbox is normal, it's the where the oil pick up pipe is.
The other one on the gearbox by the pot joint is the speedo housing looks like the screw on bit is missing.
It just looks like a standard A plus engine.
Clean the top of the pistons to see if there are any markings. Also make sure the top of the block is clean before bolting on the head.

So it's been bored out +0.040" from standard. Makes me wonder if its got a uprated cam. But that's a bit of work to find that out.
So is no engine tag. On the top.
Take some photos of the head.

You can but do bother
The head which was fitted/came with the engine has been machined so the compression ratio is correct with those pistons.
So put that head back on. If its been modified these no point putting a standard head on.
Basically put the head on that came with it.

That head looks standard but should clean up with a dremel I have an unleaded 1275 head in the garage with air box inlet and carb from a rover cooper that I could be persuaded to part with it would fit yours but you may need to pocket the block for valve clearance Neil

Actually looking at the photos again have the ports had some work? Does the 998 not have the recess for manifold alignment? If so then that has been ground away and opened up
Chambers don't look like they have been worked on as the bit sticking out between the valves is still present
Fitting a bigger head basically means bigger valves which in turn usually means faster gas flow and more power
