Thanks for all your replies re running rough sorted now, only thing now is heater is working but not on screen just blowing into car, any ideas please

Check the flap in the heater actually moves when you select between car and windscreen . You can hear it moving usually .
Check the convoluted air hoses from the heater to the air vents at the bottom of the screen are actually attached .
You make need to remove some trim to check this out .

As dave says check the hoses chances are they have been kicked off ,when the heaters get old the foam seal on the flap deteriorates and has to be removed and replaced foam draught excluder works well but may have to uprate the glue to a heat safe glue .....
