I take it you have connected it to a battery with jump leads.

if you power up the solenoid can't you just bridge its terminals with an insulated screw driver?

If the switch relay thing is the solenoid then it's not a pre-engaged starter, try knocking it lightly with a hammer to free off the drive gear

Urrm ok pre engaged starters require power to two points on the connections one is for the heavy current supply to the motor windings and the other to engage the solonoid which switches the current to the motor and also activates the bendix . to do this firstly put the motor into a vice or workmate to support the motor as it has quite a kick using a set of jump leads and a battery connect the battery positive to the supply bolt (the other bolt on the solonoid has allready got a conection to the motor NOT this one ) then conect the earth to one of the bolt lugs on the casting of the motor body near bendix end. with a small bit of wire about 6 inches put one end on the bolt with the positive jump lead then put the other end on to the large flat blade connector it may spark a little ,this should turn the motor and also throw out the bendix ,if the bendix does not throw out it could be one of two reasons 1) battery not charged and too low 2)bendix seized ,use light oil like wd 40 work it in and free it up then add some engine oil to it problem solved. if nothing happens then the motor is likely u/s and needs a rebuild (yes this is still possible ! )

The starter is fine a spins the flywheel. no problem.

as dean says the starter is fine. the fly wheel spins but the fan doesnt! take spark plugs out there is no movement from the pistons. put the engine in gear and one minute the fan turns then it doesnt the flywheel is allways turning. the dizzy fails to turn also. whats wrong? ?

Has the ring gear slipped on the flywheel, or the flywheel spinning on the crank taper?

good guess stephen. the locking washers lugs have both sheared off!!! this meaning the flywheel was indeed engaged with the starter, just, and the flywheel spinning on the crank!!!! so if anyone has a new washer hanging around im after one else ive got to wait on ordering one
