Hi guys I have been offered an engine Avonbar 1380 A+ with Stage II head fast road cam + anciliarys also has a straight cut box fitted in subframe with radiator / LCB / new brakes / recon driveshafts etc Fresh built / never fired but been in storage for 10-12 years so therefore has some surface rust see attachment. So question is whats it worth? and how much of a strip down would be required to get it running? Obviously no idea on the internal corrosion but what would you pay? N Attachments:

Seriously what do you think of the corrosion on the port work / rockers? I guess you have to assume the whole lot is like this... can it be saved and whats it worth?
Cheers

If it is what you say it is, then realistically it would cost 4-5 grand to replace that lot. But without knowing the condition and history I wouldn't risk anything over £500 personally. Was it actually put together by Avonbar? You'd want to strip it down, check over and bolt back together as a precaution before running it. If it has some numbering on the block / head maybe speak to Ian at AVR to see if he has any records of the spec

This is being offered to me by a guy at work and apparently he bought it new from Avonbar.
Can anyone ID the brakes are they 8.4 or 7.5? the shocks are Koni's
Also is that an 11 stud A-Series head on a 9 stud A+ block?

yes that is a 11 stud head on a 9 stud block, it does not matter or effect anything so dont worry about it .
like stephen said it will need to stripped to check its what he says it is, i would of thought if its avonbar the head will have stamps or the block will,
the head has been worked but how for its hard to tell with out measuring etc. they are 1.3 standard rockers
if you can unbolt the head and have a look,
its a gamble like stephen said £500. as if its not what its ment to be, you could still get your money back by selling bits
those brakes to me look like 8.4" but i could be wrong.
why do you need it!!!!!

If you can get it for a similar price steven sugests then a biit of steel wool and some engine building oil and a fine honeing tool the engine will be fine it is mostly steel after all and just surface rust which should easily be removed by steel wool and some elbow grease . my tuppanyworth i had fitted an engine to a car which had been outside with plugs removed and pots full of water once i had removed the loose rust from the cylinders and honed them rotated the engine for a good while with new oil it started and is still running today another block i inherited from an old fella was a cooper 998 and it was sat in his garage on the floor for over ten years ,apart from a very slight browning on the cylinders it was fine i think dean has it now ,have you used it yet dean ?

It was a crank bit was fine. Had it reground due to surface rust l. But it's now built up in my engine turns smoothly.
The engine build did not like grinding off the hardened surface. Ha ha.

The guy at work has confirmed it is stamped by avonbar and the g/box came from somerford mini... he contacted avonbar who gave him the basic spec but they are under new ownership.
Hes looking for £800 if anyone is interested. a bit too much for me but if it was cheaper I would be interested for my next project.

Price too steep

Ian Hargeaves is one of the old boys of Mini Tuning , he may well have records . As Stephen says he is now AVR and seperate from his old Avonbar Company, not sure how it all works because the two are still linked . Regardless of all that Ian is , in opinion a very helpfull chap .
They are non A+ rockers on that one . Reckon they are 8.4s too.
