Hi there, thought I would put my audio system back in my mini since Dean made me up a rear seat speaker board but my head unit is playing up! Basically it keeps cutting out when I try turning it up louder so I can actually hear it at a decent level over the engine noise, turns it self off then will come back on again in a couple of sec's. Tried it with the engine running to see if it was a power problem and still doing the same thing.... Any idea's or does it sound like the head unit has had it?? Ant

Just tried an old head unit and that works fine and can turn it up as loud as I want, but thats not with the sub plugged in but don't think that would make a difference. So gotta be the head unit, idea's!?! Ant

i had exactly the same issue but it wasnt the headunit it was my wiring, i just replaced the cheap halfords wire for some nice thick speaker wire and it was fine. however if one headunit works and your current one doesnt then imagine is something to do with your headunit

Can you connect the sub with the other headunit? Without having a play with a multimeter and looking at your wiring it sounds likely that the headunit is cutting out from a voltage drop. So I'd try and have the sub playing with another head unit, just to rule that out.

The other head unit is an old 1 and doesn't have any pre-outs so I can't plug the sub in to see if thats what causing the problem. With the head unit that is cutting out I have disconnected the sub through the remote cable so its not actually being told to switch on and still having the same problem. To be honest I think its the head unit, I bought it 2nd hand awhile ago off eBay so probably coming towards the end of its life ! Any last idea's/checks I can do..... Ant

i agree with the others it does sound like power/voltage dropping when you demand more load (amperage) ,the other head unit may not have the same demand as the one cutting out ,simple answer is to run a heavy grade wire temporarily from the battery pos and negative to the positive supply and ground on the head unit ,and also link it to the power amp on the sub (if you have one?) then try it again ,if it still does it you have an equipment fault if it works fine then you have found the fault and saved the expence of looking for another head unit . regards Shawn
