hi all, iv decided to upgrade my engine abit more by going for a fuel injection system with my supercharger. however im thinking of the strain on my gearbox, iv currently got a standard 4 speed with central oil pick up and xpin diff the gearbox has only done 1000 miles. iv been speaking to stuart at vmax scart and he thinks that the standard mini gearbox is more than good enough even the drop gears. does anyone know any diffrent? i was thinking to go for the straight cut drop gears. good idea or wasted cash? also when running for a while or in heavy traffic my clutch gets very heavy, even on or off. it was at its worse wen i did l2b last yr doing the mini convoy around the park. im using a turbo pressure plate and AP racing clutch plate. is this due to a lack of ventilation for cooling the plate. iv seen people who have bored holes in the bell house to help with cooling is this something i might need to do? cheers matt

you can do, mean another £220, jo holland has a set on his engine and was keen to get a set but half regreting it as the noise on long journeys is going to do his head in, so when he rebuilds it he is leaving them out.
if stuart at vmax scart says your gearbox will be fine leave it, its only done 1000 miles, i always throught a standard box would only take 100bhp
to go straight cut gears with straight cut drops your talking around somewhere around £700 plus
ask a few other big tuners to see what they say

with the injection kit stuart recons i should see a 130 to 140bhp figure, i might have to consult other engine builders as to what the actual standard box can cope with. how bad is the noise generated by straight cut drop gears? is it a job for ear defenders on long journeys? any suggestions about the clutch?\ cheers matt

I'm running SC drops and a SCCR box and I'm only aiming for 100bhp. Depends on your budget really. Straight cut gears aren't actually stronger than helical, but there is less side loading- hence why standard drop gears often fail. Will sound awesome....

iv been looking into the straight cut drop gears. apparently there is 2 types of idle gear one which uses the standard needle roller bearing? and the other is a built in roller bearing which is better apparently? if i was to go for the roller bearing idle gear, does that involve modifying the gear box casing and the drop gear housing? what ratio is best 1:1? yes stephen would sound great ;D however i am doing the paris mini run this year so might need to buy some ear deffenders and a pack of pain killers. is it really noisy in the car or is it something that can be lived with? as my car only really goes for the ocasional blast in the summer and does a few shows. matt

I used the MiniSpares drop gears as they are quite well priced compared to some others. 1:3 ratio will play around with the gear ratios so if you're happy with the current set up and you're not changing the gearset then stick with 1:1. I cant tell you how noisy it is yet although i went out in Paul's Cooper a few years ago and it was quite loud!
