So I have decided i'm going to try and do a cheep DIY refurb a set of steel wheels. The wheels have already had the tyres removed so my plans are to rub them down with a rotary wire brush and sand paper then prime, paint and lacquer them. I have some questions about this though: - What primer should I use on bare metal??? What paint should I use People have suggested "5 wheels silver", is this ok or are there any other options Also what clear lacquer should I use and is clear lacquer actually required Finally I will be doing this with rattle cans, how many do you think will be needed to do five 4.5x10" reverse rims? All inputs welcome. Cheers Neil

i have done many wheels over the last few years, and i have found the best way is to get the blasted and powder coated, they charge about £15 a wheel, make a good job, make sure they get all the grit out the groove in the front of the wheel
but if you go the the DIY way. use a wire brush for a angle grinder, ( tool station about £4) will make it much easier
good coat in red oxide is best ( about £5 a can ), unless you want to pay more for acid exch primer, about £10-£12 a can 500ml
to get a good coat i say a can will do about 2 wheels, inside and out,
5 wheels paint is ok i have used it, with no problems, you need about 2-3 coat, to get full coverage, if you have a compressor and gun it will work out cheaper to buy a tin of paint
i have used laquar from the car shop and also screw fix and tool statin do it, but a bit cheaper, 2 good coat should be fine.
dont for get to flat it back between layers.
so you can see why i say its easier to get the blasted and powder coated, your be paying £15 in paint per wheel, plus your have to get the back to bare metal, paint them, and spend time doing it,
blasters is easy drop them off a week or two later go pick them up, it will work out cheaper and they do it inside and out, they ahve just updated all the equipment, as the have a big contract with BP, they get checked often, and they have to be spot on.
but i started of doing it myself

Neil, Sussex Blast have done a set of wheels for me in Old English White though it was a while ago and I can't remember the price. Dean's right, no matter how careful you are or how much you work at it, there are areas of the wheel that you just can't get at as well at a blaster so it's by far the best way of doing it. They also have an excellent sand blasting unit that's great for cleaning up SU carburettor parts if that's your thing. M
