Hey guys................... Generally hating my mini at the moment, had a few electrical gremlins with the leccy on the sprite over the winter and am now just for the sake of it replacing the coil, cap, rotor arm,ht leads and plugs along with its service BUT it seems like I've got half an SPI wiring loom and I can't for the life of me figure out which coil I need. Loads of conflicting views whether it should be ballast or not! I've got sources saying the Lucas sport coil DLB 105 is suitable for pre '84 minis then mini sport (as if I would trust them) saying its cool for pre '96 cars!>!>!>!> Then there's the lucas DLB 101 which says is for all minis ballasted from '82-'96! mine is just a 1275cc carbed!!! I AM SOOOOO CONFUSED !!! HELP

Hi, Recommendation would be to give Caffyns (Hailsham) a call as they were rover dealers & still supply parts. All you need to give is your registration number. They should be able to give you the original part number for it & you can either buy it off them or cross reference the part number & find it else where. Best just to get from them though, then you cant go wrong. ;D The number is 01323 845666 (Caffyns at Hailsham) Good luck. (PS: Rach - I've now become a knowledgable mechanic over night!! )

They both look the same from outside. I was meaning if you got the make and no off coil any car shop should be able to tell you if its ballest or not. Or you could test it with multiemeter.

Yeah i'll have a gander wednesday, whip it off and see if theres a serial number or anything off it!
The thing thats most confusing though is just how much variance there is in what year mini different mini shops are saying one specific coil is for!!?! had about a 15 year range of cars, which is a problem for me because my min's from a nice random time when rover felt like using my cars wiring loom/electrics as a guinea pig for the SPi!
Super awesome lol ;D

It should be ballested... I think on later cars 1990 onwards they have a gold (heatsink finned) resister behind the radiator just below the front subframe tower mount.
Hope that helps
