hi after doing the London 2 Brighton there have been some noises from the engine. 1st we thought it was the timing chain so a new 1 was fitted then a new water pump then a alternator, rad and fan. NOW i have no oil going to the head or when you take out the oil pressure switch from the block there is no oil coming out to. so I'm stuck. i tried again today and when it got a bit warm when trying to here the noise smoke started come from breathers. so can any one tell me what it is, as it costing a lot of money and still not right. regards dean

drain the engine oil out and check your drain plug to see if there is any stray bits/ lumps. has it got oil left in it ?? if it started to make a noise it sound like the pump has gone, may of picked up some metal and buggered the pump up, fingers crossed you have not damaged anything, as you said smoke started to come out the breathers, so it sounds like it got hot, i dont want to jump to far ahead as there is simpilar things to check first, but if the pump has gone, there are question like "why has it gone" " how has it gone" more than likely to be a bit of metal or lack of oil, then it will be a strip down , to check everything is ok and not damaged, flush and clean out everything, rebuild it up, also flush the gearbox to get rid of and stray bits, dont want to go this far yet as this will be the last resort

Ouch, thats some nasty noises. On Deans note, a flush of the gearbox will not be that effective. It needs a wipe/wash clean to remove all the evil chucks of metal. The oil pump will only go if ingesting vast quantities of metal. More than likely a chuck gearbox bearing or part of the gearset. Prevented by oil changes every 6000 miles or six months with 20-50 oil. Sorry That engine & gearbox needs a full strip down and reconditioning. Something you could do on your kitchen table. But even a knackered pump will still push some oil... Prime the pump. Pour some oil back into the pump from the filter head pipe. Give it a couple of minutes to work down and top up. Turn over the engine no more than six times, does it pump something? Just checking.... The oil pressure relief is the big plug next to the oil pressure switch. Can be confused with the filter bypass in the alloy filter head. On another note... I'm got a full spec 1380 for £900, includes the engine, gearbox, HIFF44 carb and Aldon dizzy.
