can anyone help me i lost steering on my mini and have removed the column to find that thay dont seem to match up. on the rack it looks like the pinch bolt should go through between the two splines however on the column the pinch bolt sits on the final splines. ive taken pics as best as i can to show what im trying to say any help appreciated

The splines on the column look pretty d**n shot there mate, looks like the pinch bolt has been too loose and consequently the splines not engaging with each other. Looks like you need a new column to me. The pinch bolt should go between the two sets of splines on the shaft that comes out of the steering rack.

thanks paul the problem is that the pinch bolt was very tight but looking at the cloumn the bolt runs through where the splines are so with the column in place only about 2 mm of splines will be in contact eg the lower splines on the rack would not be in use is this correct my thought would be that the rack and column are not conpatable can somone tell me if im right

The column should be compatible, there are a few types but I think they all have the same size splines at the rack end, what you may need to do is remove the plastic shroud at the top of the column, loosen the the clamp that supports the column at the dash rail and move the outer column closer to the rack, i.e. away from the steering wheel. There is a bit of adjustment in the whole system, if you remove the shroud etc, it should become obvious.

My steering went all weird one day , turned it and it was a bit vague . Luckily it was yards from work so i could leave it in the workshop and look at it at lunch . It had shed the splines in the column . The bolt was tight and the column was correctly positioned down the rack pinion . My thoughts were that it was a 48 year old column and just worn out but I dont think the incident being run off the road by the chav in the beemer and hitting the kurb helped as i had a tight grip on the wheel on impact . My wrists were bad after that . Anyway , dont put that back on . Fit another but check its condition first .
I just had a column knocking about for mine , being 1960 it doesnt have a steering lock so any will fit but i reckon the only differance in the columns will be whether the car has a steering lock or not as I would expect a slot in the column for the steering lock to go into if it has one . . The airbag ones could be differant i guess .
While your at it ....lift the front carpet and check the 4 nuts holding the rack 'u' bolts are tight , they can loosen off . 2 each side in about the position your heels are when driving the car , lift the carpet and you will see . If they are loose the steering is affected too, although your initial prob is definately that column.
