Hey peoples, Was just wondering if any one has had a go at fitting an alarm/immobiliser themselves to their mini?? As i have to leave mine parked in a random road near uni I'm thinking of at least having a bit of security on the beast. I have been looking at the one in the moss europe catalogue, it's made specifically for classic minis so thought it would be ideal. Any help would be much appreciated and has any one dealt with moss before?? Any good??? Cheers Steve ;D

your better off fitting a tracker as everyone ignors alarms these days and minis are so easy to bypass immobilisers as all the wiring is exposed in the engine bay.

trackers are expensive and more for top end cars, bmw M3, 911 turbo's, etc etc, plus you have to pay a mouthly fee, i had a moss alarm, it was rubbish and drained the battay, they may of changed by now? some places were you buy alarms from will fit them for you, on my old ford ka i had Toad alarm, bought and fitted by " in car" in eastbourne, never had a problem with it, never drained the battery, only had to change the battery in the key thob once, and its been on the car for 7 years now, if it was me i would look in to them as some alarms are rubbish you can normal get a thacham 1 alarm for around £250, it will lower your insurance as long as its fitted by a registered fitter, plus fitting is free if bought from a shop. and also can be wired in to the central locking, if you have one, W&P sell them at a reasonable price, stephan will know more on this, www.toadalarm.com/car_alarms.asp

Trackers and alarms are a lot of dosh. Is your mini rare, limited edition, concours with no rust etc etc? Guessing not, so theft for the value of the car is not an issue. Then the only other folk who want to nick your mini will be break it for some rather valuable bling or a joy ride. If I'm wrong, the following is only 'good basics' So... always remove the radio front and valuables. Get an old cassette radio front and leave an old dirty t-shirt over the 6x9's. Don't leave any attractive incentives for some punk to want to get into your car. Same with the wheels, maybe some steels with budget tyres when your not at the shows or home. A battery isolate and steering wheel lock is a very cheap way to prevent the joy riders. Its the cheapest options. At the end of the day... regardless of what you buy, someone who really wants your car WILL take it.

;DI had a immobilser fittedd by Street Cars £100 all wiring concealed, i also got a certificate for the insaurence company, which lowered my premium, not much but every penny counts.
I agree to some extent with Simon, but would still reccomend at least an immobilser.

Unless you're going for a decent alarm (£400+) then as Simon said, a hidden battery cut off switch a dislock steering wheel thing (most are crap apart from disc lock) or perhaps a removable steering wheel? a pair of Toad alarm stickers and a flashing red LED light will do as much good as a cheap alarm... so maybe even consider those too.
But never post up what you've got on here by any means. Mine is extremely secure and would be the biggest pain in the arse to steal ;D ;D.
But I agree with Si- if someone wants to steal it they will so it's only ever a case of putting em off for long enough for someone to notice

Time for my ten peneth, I agree with simon to a certain extent but monetry value and sentimental value are two different things and I believe most mini owners do so for sentimental value so would therefore wish to protect their assets. If you are prepared to invest £400.00 in an alarm system why not look at local garages to rent or driveways (as has become popular more recently). I do agree with the battery isolator or imobilisor and removing any temptations from the car whilst parked though. john

yes all good advise , i would reccomend you simply remove the rotor arm for immobilising you wont find many scrotes pre armed with a rotor arm unless they are after specificly a mini and as far as alarm ,,,,,the world is your oyster but remember if a scrote gets in to the car and finds they cant move it they almost allways get the hump and try and destroy the vehicle by fire , or serious vandalism. keep all bits and bobs which could earn a few quid for the next score of drugs out of the car if you cant stash out of sight thats all you can do in this day and age with a vehicle with locks and windows first devised in the fifties im afraid
