Hi Ant, A 5 litre can will do the job inc. filter (check dipstick). I use Millers Trans M, and change every 3000 miles. Some would say use cheap 20/50 at same mileage, you can never change a transverse engine oil too often. john

I use that one also Neil but it's for knackered out old engines (like Lynns Mk3) that are prone to leaking because it is a much higher viscosity. i.e. thicker oil so it stops a few minor leaks around seals. john

So who here hasent got a knackered out old A-Series On a serious note the Halfords one has a thing called seal swell in it for revitalising oil seals I used to use it but found a cheeper version at SMDs I bought several cans but then the get though about 1 litter with every 5 gallons of fuel. N

That's why I'm trying to preserve it. My 'A' series has only done 16,000 miles from new so it get's the best of everything. ;D ;D ;D john

Just had another thought , it's not a good idea to use the Halfords Classic 20/50 to top up the dash pot on the carb. I know they say in the original manual to use 20/50 but this stuff is heavier than the original and could affect the flutter of the damper. Probably best to use Duckhams 20/50 as per book, it's still available from minispares. john

Personaly I just use 3 in one oil for the dash pot although I have heard of people using motorbike fork oil to make it really responsive. N

Unless u've got a racecar you need a certain amount of damping so 20w50 is the best option.
I always use the Halfords oil, it's made by Comma and apparently to very similar specs as Duckhams. It's green too! Plus it's about 11 quid on trade card, although I need about 5.5 litres for mine because of the cooler

Comma is the one I picked up at southern minidays last year it is also green but only cost £10 per can. I get through quite alot of it though although I have never changed the oil! Still not managed to get a trade card either N

Most likely the same stuff then...Halfords probably just chuck on the extra £7 for retail to rip even more people off...average 50% markup on everything in the store. Not that I'm complaining with my staff discount and trade card that I'm not giving back Theyve clamped down on what they define as a trader now- so it has to be mechanics only.
