corroded bulb contact inserts within the lamp fittings seen it many times , same scenario with the fog lamps the contacts get corroded and the bit that sits round the outside of the bulb becomes insulated or resistive green or white in colour. hope this helps any problems give me a buzz im sure its not the end of the world and an easy one with the right knowlege and test gear.

also make sure you have a good earth. and as shawn said check for corroided connectors and bulbs, clean and replace anyones you come across, also the the wire can come corroided or broken down,
also look for nips and damaged wires,
have you got a electric tester it will make it easy to find the fault.

You say you have checked the fuses but could need a new fuse box, did the same on my old mini. After putting a new fuse box in and whole new set of fuses problem solved. Going to need to get myself a new fuse box for this one as well because the windscreen wipers, washer and heater fan all stopped working and still no joy after new set of fuses !! Ant

if you unscrew it from you bulk head and look at the back you may find its badly corroided, most minis are, replace it like ant said it will solve a few problems, not the most cheapest thing in the world for what it is www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=37817other wise pick one up at the shows or ebay

I guess you can get a voltmeter to the wire and chase back the voltage or lack of along the wires.
Under the interior heat is the wires heading to the reversing light switch at the bottom of the gearstick. There are two in-line plugs, one for each wire. Check them.
Next get under the car and check the plugs into the switch, that rabbit you last run over may of had the last laugh by catching the connection/wires.

borrowing a multimeter today to check. Also going to jack the car up and check those wires. Did look down by the gearstick and they are connected but will double check them when i get home tonight.

reverse lights now working after using multimeter to check wireing and all was ok. Cleaned up contacts and changed bulbs so all good now.... Just need to sort out rear light, which happens to be the one behind the petrol tank, and then sort out the spot lights.
