As the chaps on the IMM08 know my car was pretty crap on the fuel consumption! However after looking at the car i noticed that something was a miss!!!! There are two thin pipes going to the underside of the air filter, one red and one yellow! and the red one was no longer connected! i think this is the thermac valve vacuum pipe, so i connected it and it seams to have helped.... However there seems to be a hole in the pipe (burnt). So the question is... Could this be the the problem?
Cheers Capt BT ;D

i take it you have a spi or mpi then,
my opinion and i only work on clockwork minis is to replace it, if it is there it will be for something and if it broken its going to effect something,
talk to shawn, ,i think he has the tool to plug into your cars computer to check everything, i think

Yep, an SPI. Will try and get the little hole patched up and see how it helps.

my opinion and i only work on clockwork minis is to replace it. The throttle position sensor has failed or no connection to the ECU, as per the ECU fault code Simon had checked over the weekend. The ECU is currently in the limp home function, ie to much fuel to avoid a lean mix... burnt valves and pistons. So the first stop is to check the connections, wiring continuity and then if not resolved, replace the throttle sensor as per the link. www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=33573But I have a spare one you can borrow.... ;D The pipes below will cause a poo idle and draw in to much air, weakeding the mixture. Sorting them out will improve the problem even more. Shawn will then be able to clear your fault codes in the ECU and hopefully, many happy motoring days are ahead!

Think i might have got to the bottom of the problem! The vacuum pipe from the ecu had a split in the connector as well as the art temp vacuum pipe being buggerd. The car seems to be a lot better now and hopefully the fuel consumption will be a lot better now Si

Simon, Your car was smoking a lot when we left the ferry and climbed out of Dover. Looked like a car with the choke left out so no wonder it was thirsty. Hopefully all better now. MMc.

Cheers for the info M, hopefully over the next few days i will be able to confirm everything is ok. I spoke to Chris Westgate (of Wesgate Motors) and he said that the vacuum pipe would cause the problems. I even phoned Somerford Minis and they gave me a bit more info on the various vacuum pipes so all looking good.

SI , if you had a problem with vacume pipes replacing the pipe or rectifying the problem will not solve the entire situation , the rule is 1) fix the visible fault , 2) erase ecu fault code on ecu which was thrown up by initial fault. 3) re read codes , if clear jobs a good'n. 4) if not recitfy fault . 5) erase code 6) re read .
spi and multi (2 point) mems rover ecu's do not erase fault code staus automaticly when repair is done , it ALLWAYS HAS TO BE DONE with a code reder and eraser. sounds as if your car has been to IMM and back on whats commonly known in the trade as get you home mode , desighned to run in a rich mixture (heavy fuel consumption) with that milage it may of caused some problems with the cat and your oxygen sensor too.
