Was told head gasket had gone and would cost £350 to sort,
took car to another garage, and job was sorted for £150 and only faulty rad was replaced.

How often do you hear of people scraping cars due to the head gasket going . The time is with the hours to take it apart, fix and refit. Its not cheap. And who's to say a more efficient new rad will now just hide a head gasket problem for a failure at a later date, a false economy? I step down from my soap box ;D The Hermitage Garage did some good work on my TR7 a few years back. But it I did go DIY due to the cost in the end

A few of the cars scrapped by myself or customers at work this year due to uneconomical repair p reg vectra estate , waterpump went as did cambelt and bent valves. Renault Laguna estate , disel r reg , higher mileage , gearbox went . Tata diesel pick up truck , 51 reg, yes 51 reg, bent valves needed head . scrapped Renault 5 mot failure Metro 1275 auto 44k , mot failure . Renault clio , DIESEL mot failure , I bought it for £10 My old Citrien ax , needed new rack and a couple of tyres , not worth doing as only paid £25 for it in first place and the tax was also due . MONDEO ESTATE , M REG MOT failure the list goes on The cars listed are handy vehicles as they are diesel or estates . Its purely because the value of the car is not high enough to warrant spending the money on them.

we just scrapped a 02 plate golf SDI, due to a snapped engine mount, it cracked the block, and killed the cam belt, also a Astra td for a cracked head.

If we all thought like that then I would have scrapped my cooper 5 years ago. I really need to get out there and sell these people some magic cooper tape to get their cars back on the road N

I refuse to go there anymore. My car once broke down on the way there for a MOT and the next morning when they opened I wenet there, apologised for breaking my appointment and wanted to rearrange and i had this Neanderthal give me a huge amount of abuse. The owner Ian just stood a few feet away and let him do it. I have to MOT over 30 cars a year. Mots 4 U now do it and I receive fantastic service and they dont do any work themselves so have no reason to fail a car to get extra work out of it.
