Hi guys..and gals. I'm in Hastings and have a 96/P 1.3mpi mini. Just spent a small fortune getting th bodywork up to scratch and now the poxy engine needs replacing! d**n these mini's you can't help but love em and they can't help but play around! Anyway, could really use some technical expertise as I am not at all mechanically minded. So far I've established that i need a replcaement MPI engine (anyone know where i can get one?) Or am gonna need one built.................but am on a budget. Any help would be very much appreciated. Bryn.

Trouble is, with being somewhat childlike with no technical expertise i have had to reply on local mechanics to tell me whats wrong. One says big end has gone, one says piston and othe says excessive wear most likely valve train etc but all 3 say it's terminal.

Nice.... How many miles on the motor, driven hard and fast, motorways or short shopping trips? So ignoring what you've been told, what are the symptoms?

38000 miles with FSH,
driven by previous owner communting from e/bourne to brighton daily and hardly at all by me in 3 months i've had it.
It is making loud ticking noise tappety like but louder. Noise is louder when engine warm hardly noticeable when cold. The noise is present when idling. it gets louder when i ease off accelerator and quitens a little when I accelerate.
Since I've had it oil pressure never been prob and oil levels have been fine. when i bought it i did notice oil was low so am wondering if previous owner may have been a bit slack with maintenance and possible run with no oil?

1275 MPI engine strip down report, so far..... Oil leaks from clutch seal, rocker cover, head gasket, timing chain cover. Good for a mini. Suprised the clutch wasnt slipping. Water leak from a core plug and small leak from the front of the head gasket. Cyclinders heavily coked. Nothing special Cam hardeness has worn through on lobes 1, 2 and 3, explains the taping. I've yet to look at the crank/gear box. But with 40thou miles on the clock, I hope to find nothing but fair wear at tear. Shopping list so far for a rebuild, gasket/seal set, cam, followers, core plug, reprogramable ecu and my supercharger ;D.

swiftune sw5i cam rebuild kit may be what your after Si, got cam, followers , and the oil pump (which is a must on a rebuild) plus some other bits in the kit. Swiftune say the sw5i cam works on turbo and supercharged engines. Kit retails just under £100 . www.swiftune.co.ukd

Oil pump, that is on the list, but I'm not that far in the stripdown yet.
Propably crank bearings, rings and tidy the bores as well... maybe some super pistons.... swiftune cam has been on my browse list.
Am I right in thinking you've got one?

hi si ive fitted six sw5's in the past a fantastic improvement to the performance to a road car ,however like any performance improvement increases wear on other parts of the engine in the long run because it encourages the drivers to rag the car harder . none the less a brilliant tool to have in the engine , with the blower on it should exceed the 100 bhp mark by a very long way .

Engine strip down report - Continued... Cheers Paul for the puller - The strip down at last makes progress!! That was an easy flywheel to remove!! I'll use these again ;D ;D ;D (Yes this is indication that the cam & followers are sh@@@ed. Protected under our roof at last! Next - Chemical clean and half engine strip down.
