Alright guys, Mini been fine for ages now and running fine, popped into town this morning and drove fine, went to leave and didn't like starting with white smoke from engine bay/bonnet but got it started. Just went to see how would start after been in the garage out the rain for the afternoon and won't start/turn over plus found this white/creamy deposit on underside of oil filler cap - blown head gasket...? Ant

Burnt petrol discharge? Don't immediately assume that the problems are caused by a blown head gasket, the mayonnaise on the oil filler cap may have been there a while and the smoking/non starting issue may be caused by something else! Check the basics first (fuel/ignition), continue your investigations logically! Use the fault finding guides in the Haynes manual. Good luck!

Are you using any water? If its getting in the oil you will see it dissapearing from the radiator

If it was hard to start , then it was probably hydronic , so the reason for the water and oil mix
If you do, do a head gasket make use you use a payen head gasket, not a cheap copper one. As your just be doing it again.
Or even a cosmetic head gasket. But they are around £80. Oooccchhhh

Cheers for the replies, already ordered this afternoon a new Payen BK450 gasket - to be honest I never go cheap when getting mini replacement parts (always uprated/competition more expensive parts). Ant

;Dif you have what looks like water in the oil (indicated by mayo on oil cap) it may be provident with a helper to see if there is pressure in the radiator when cranking by simply taking off the rad cap and holding your hand in a sealing method over the hole if it feels quite presurised then it will be head gasket ,bearing in mind water system can reach the dzzy heights of about 6psi you may also note a nasty smell in the radiator as well .Dean also mentioned hydraulicing this sometimes happens when the engine has blown into the water or oil ways and upon cooling has sucked fluids into one of the bores ,when cranked of course on compression stroke becomes crowbarred owing to fluids stopping the engine from rotating . Paul could be right and the mayo could simply be years of crank case and rocker cover condensation none the less . well you have a gasket so good luck and enjoy the experience at least its not going to be in the rain and dark at newquay ! the last one i did i had it sorted in 45 mins ! this is the quickest ive ever done it door locked phones off and no destractions lol

Always always use a Payen head gasket set .Just bought one for mk1 from Mini spares and it cost £15 . A non Payen set will cost you more from a factor . Remember I had trouble with a British gaskets head gasket on red mayfair . I bought one off shelf locally for speed and fact the car was only a run around . That gasket leaked water down the front of the block without even running the engine , leaked as soon as i poured the water in !! I replaced it with a Payen head gasket , no problems. In December at work we replaced head gasket on customers 1275 automatic Mini . She needed it back on road . One of the other guys ordered head set ( i was away) we fitted it and water dribbled out the front of the head gasket when water was poured in . Another British gaskets head set . With a vernier we measured the thickness of the fire rings on the gasket ( the 4 large holes in the gasket ) and we measured the thickness of the sealing rings around the waterways in the gasket. The fire rings were thicker . Meaning there is a small gap between the thinner water way sealing rings and the cylinder head face which allows water to escape .

I had a similar problem with a "British Gaskets" set,it never really sealed and didnt take much to make it leak. PartCo in Eastbourne sell Unipart gasket sets which are Payen BK450' gaskets in a Unipart pakage.

Your right they do , we use Newhaven Branch but they were out of stock both times we needed them . I wanted the car on the road so I was a bit impatient . The customer needed the car for the weekend so we bought the one in stock on the day , obviously they lost it for weekend anyway and we got Autolec to swap a British gasket one for a Payen on the monday.
Autolec have both the dodgy head gaskets I have mentioned and is waiting for the British Gaskets rep to visit them . I will let you all know what they have to say about them when I hear.
