the handling of my car hadnt been great latly and it was only today i noticed that the drivers side front wheel sits 2 inches further foreward than the passengers wheel looked at all the bars and they dont look bent but the rod that goes foreward to the front of the car is sitting further foreward than it should. could this indicate that the whole subframe has warped its the only explaination i can see at the moment.

Have a general check over of the suspension , check the tie rods, the threads on the front end and there bushes , could even get a tape measure out and check stuff that way . For instance a car equipped with adjustable tie rods can have the castor easily adjusted. Adjusting the castor will depending on which way you adjust it either pull the wheel forward in the arch or back . See what i am getting at . Check the rods are not bent , bent rods are shorter than straight ones and pull the wheel forward . A problem with to much castor angle on a Min is that the self centreing action of the steering after you turn the wheels is reduced , so if you are finding you need to put in more input to get the steering straight after going round a corner , something aint right . This is a common problem on all older minis its due to the G/Box & Driver being located on tat side of the Car, hence it takes more ware and tare. I think Matilda is suffereing from this very same problem... (Si/Josie To Confirm) Anyway either get hilos which will fix the problem like I just did on my pickup or the alternative is new donuts & nuckle cups (as these have probably worn through by now esp drivers side) N :-)

have a good look at those tie rod bushes, sounds like one has collapsed or is missing, although saying all that, the tie rods were actually different lengths when i bought my cooper due to one being modified (badly) New tie rods are pretty cheap.

Neil, its not height .
Could also check the front subframe mounts , 2 inches forward sounds a lot though whether it be tie rods or the frame
Could take it for a 4 wheel alignment ?

my only experience when i was in minibizz was a car came in which had had a shunt on the front o/s , the wing was replaced just fine no modification needed to alighn it but when it came to wheel position it was vastly out bu a couple of inches, what we had to do was remove the subframe and jig up the front floor and use portapower the realighn the floor , bulkhead cross member adjust shape of subframe (slightly diamond shape) and then reassemble we also found someone had changed the leighnth of one of the tiebars to try and compensate before it had come to us .

Wow, thats a little rare, easy DIY job to replace, but would not of been easy to find with a DIY inspection.
Who's not been greesing their nipples... ;D

yeh it was only found when i took a crowbar to the upper arm and found that it was moving. although it only moves a few cm there due to the pivot of the arm it is eggadurated and moves the wheel a few inches forward when under stress ie flooring out of a junction and getting a horrible knock as the wheel hits the arch
