ok i was speaking to the other mini hardcores at bexhill and learnt that they can usually get 200 miles around out of their tank.......................i can sqeeze 90 miles out of mine...added to the fact that i can smell really strong fuel when cruzing and that the engine runs on a lot when i switch it off not forgeting that it sounds like a dying rhino *breath* i think its fair to say i have something majorly wrong with the old SU carb now the question is do i use my bone idle knowledge of carbs to identify the problem before sunday OR do i spend 2 tanks of fuel on sunday so that the pros (you guys) can diagnose the sick carb.

get it rolling roaded at gerald dale, he is ok, but will be able to set you r carb up tell you what is wrong.
or turn the adjust screw on the bottom of the carb right up then down 11 flats, nearly 2 turns then it should be right,

Cheapest option is call Shawn 07960 439 380, for a good price he could come to you and get you going and give you some pointers. ;D ;D Or go to Gerald Dale in Ninfield , spend £100 on a rolling road and tune up. Very very recommended. Tuning is setting your car to the best output in economy and performance. 01424 893903 ;D You could listen to our advice about floats and needles, but without looking at the car you could waste money replacing good components (and more fuel!! ;D) You should get about 30mpg, I normally get 250miles from a tank a fuel, 200 when the pedal is in the carpet. With the amount of fuel your losing, you could be in risk of an engine fire. Fix it before you have to pay an insurance excess!!

Sounds like you might be running around in a time bomb If it stinks of petrol where is it coming from? Your best bet is to get over and see Gerald Dale B4 sun and get him to have a look at carb.Would not fancy taking it on a long run ( Brooklands ) like that.Speak to Alan he will recomend Gerald .

perhaps your tank is leaking under the filler neck where the round foam seal is (which nicely collects water). you would not be able to see this without moving the tank. perhaps your filler cap is leaking. Ive had both of these issues before, with the first i kept smelling fuel and the second i could literally see it pouring out when taking right handers lol!!! v scary!! just dont smoke is my advice

try only filling it with £5 worth of fuel instead of filling it right up and see if it still smells. what year is your car? early 90s 998cc s were high compression and they tend to run on with cheap tescos unleaded. try using an octane booster or something like BP ultimate/shell optimax

give gerrald a call to find out what his hourly charge is , i suspect he will be charging the full rate as he is a fully fledged business . i am a bit kinder to the pocket , some would say cheap !im not a fully fledged business just a self supporting hobby (it doesnt seem to be supporting itself at mo) but still know my stuff .

Don't want to steal your business Shawn , Just Gerald a call for a just. Tuned car and a health check. The best option by far. PS Shawn will get you going for a cheaper price ;D He's sorted out, Tony, Me, probably Rachel and Alan all within the last couple of months. And he's a good chap. How's that for a neutral recommendation. ;D

i think i found out the problem lads. having finished college early today i took the idiot initative and had the carb on a workbench as soon as i got back and found that the mixture screw had been wound in so tight in a previos tune up that it bent the bimetal thing controling the float and basically it had got stuck on its richest setting! so now its back together and im just having a little trouble finding the sweet spot on the mixture screw but im confident thats sorted the fuel munchies out.

well done mate, depending on what carb you got you should have a lifting pin on the underneath which lifts the piston up.
when you lift it the engine will do one of 3 things.
1. it will cough splutter and die - weak mixture 2. will spees up at an increased level - rich mixture. 3. engine speed will raise slightly and stay at a constant speed. - more or less perfect.
obviusly you need to move the adjustment nut either clockwise or anti clockwise depending on which way you want to go.
dont ask which way to turn the bolt, last time i tried working it myself and oldgit spent five minutes pointing to the sky.
double check your haynes manual just in case i got the above the wrong way round

i think i worked out that turning it anti clockwise lowers the float and gives and makes it leaner and vice versa. is this lifting pin on a SU HIF carb and is it just a pin or a platform?

you got me there, hehe, maybe someone who knows the names of the different ones could tell you.
if not the other way of doing it is take the air filter housing off and lift from in the air intake. ive done that before.
