hi . it not to hard to change the idle gear get a hayes workshop manuel it is better than the owners manuel. it has step by step for rod and remote gearboxes.
why has it cost £500 pound . i have got 2 spare idle gears of even 2 set of drop gears you could of had cheap. at that money you might as well buy a new engine.
thanks dean

Yep its easy, 1. First you have to support up the engine weight and drain the oil. 2. Remove the bell housing and engine mount (unbolting the verto clutch slave helps) 3. Remove the clutch (Get someone who has done it before and the clutch puller. Might as well replace the clutch while your at it!!) 4. Remove the side plate thing (New gasket will be needed and I recommend a new oil seal for the crank) 5. Now you have access to remove the gear. Easiest bit... ;D 6. Now bolt it all back together, new oil etc and off you drive. Most garages would remove the engine from the car and £500 sound good for removing the engine and if they did all the new gaskets, seals and throw in a clutch!! Else Good luck.

dont forget most garages go strait for the caffyns for their spares and thats where the price gets hiked for the whole job , got a quote for a spi throttle body from them and got quoted £378.95 for it trade, thats without labour costs and consumables etc. not the garages fault they are not aware of the network of enthusiasts and availability of parts thru this medium even if they are there would be no absolute garantee to the part as they are usually second hand as well .

who is Mr Calver would it be Peter or Keith of 1980's miglia racing, although very good they were no match for Mike Fry,Russel Grady, who with Mick Cable and Chris Lewis pretty much had the 80's and 90's wrapped up between them. I don't know what peters up to now but Keith is with the mini mags and also is doing some engine bits with swiftune and Kent cams.So i guess its him right. I can only go by what i was told at Cowley, i spent a week there on A+ gearbox repairs when i was an apprentice, and they were called intermediate gears at the factory. However Haynes manual do call it an idler gear so who knows?
