sounds like my mini. Accept I think I have / had worse rust. you could always try Sean in the body shop behind stone cross cars. He can do a half decent cheep job, i.e. less than £600. Flip Front is best way to go though. Are you the people from Hailsham that were 1st to turn up at last mondays meet? N

well it seems minibiz should be called mercbiz because for what i have been told is a one man band working from a lock up he is charging loads for parts and labour. I work in a retail workshop/mot centre employing 4 skilled mechanics 1 apprentice and 2 office staff, with all the insurances and overheads that go with it. The labour rate is £45 per hour. So at £600 you are looking at 13.3 hours labour. Is there really 13 hours (1.5 days)worth of welding on the car. . Is the hole u are talking about at the bottom of the windscreen/scuttle area and can only be viewed from underneath? If so remove the wing for east access, carry out repair and stick a new wing back on it. A wing is what ? £40 and you can get a repair panel for the underside of the scuttle . Paints not a problem because at the mo the car is handpainted anyway. No need for a fibreglass front either.

the quote he gave me was..."its £240 to remove and replace each wing then whatever needs welding underneath is extra"
the rusty bits are the inner sill panel that the air vent goes through and the under scuttle panel type affair...
the only trouble with removing the wing and then replacing it is that i only have access to a mig welder and not a spot welder (i thought you had to spot weld panels to pass an MOT?!?)
at the moment im just after the easiest and quickest option to get it MOT'ed... as you saw on monday i'm not overly concerned about a concourse finish ;-)

you can spot weld with a mig welder, you need to drill holes in the wing and mig spot them , i think you can get a spot welding attatchment for a mig. mot repairs need to be continuous seam welded. i would not be bothered by a spot welded on mini wing as they were spot welded on originally , providing it was welded properly of coarse. I have seen them mig welded on, weld 2 inch miss 2 inch weld 2 inch etc. i bet someone in the club has a wing put on that way. i know the sills were spot welded on when built but they always get repaired on a budget with patches so just continuos seam weld repairs to avoid bother with the mot tester.
things are differant if your doing a full rebuild with good full replacement panels. I would love to be able to have the skill to reconstruct a mini shell with new panels and a spot welder just as they were built. Actually thats not a bad idea for my pick up rebuild. where do i get a 240 volt spot welder with loads of differant atatchments? dave

I have just had to do the box sections healboard on mine. Have a look at the next mini club meeting. Have you tryed sean in Stone Cross for a quote? Also fitting a flip front would be easier as you dont have to have it welded back on Laters N

I took the plunge and chopped a wing off today... oh dear, its worse than I thought
the inner wing has started to go, the inner and outer scuttle need replacing and the panel where the air vent goes through will need replacing. and this was the good side..... add to that the rear heelboard/subframe mounting panel needs repairing Imgoing to throw the towel in and we'll have to goback to being a one mini family. If anyone needs a 998 engine there welcome to take it away for £50... ;D

the engine is in the car at the moment, its a 1988 Mayfair 998, 57700 miles on the clock, no smoke, nice gearbox, had a full service in Feb, the car failed the MOT on rust, all the emissions tests were fine (usually a sign of a Kosher motor), either somone makes me an offer and takes it for spares or im going to scrap the whole lot. Im in Hailsham, if you want to come and have a look, just give me a ring 07947 967092
p.s i'm on nights this weekend so no calls b4 2pm pleeze ;-)
