It is a Mini...
Try one with straight cut drop gears and no sound deadening!

depends on if your running a single box or twin box system. Mild or Stainless Steel?
For a quiet life get a twin box mild steel RC40 from Mini Spares.

You do not say what make the exhaust is or where the stage 1 kit is from . As Neil says , stainless is a bit noisier .
There is only one stage 1 to buy and thats Minispares as Neil said. Proven quality and performance with a excellent fit. There rc40 is the best flowing exhaust at this level of performance , if you buy the twin box system and just the kn replacement filter to fit inside the standard plastic airbox I doubt you would hear much differance . You got a 3 inch bore Peco pants silencer and a bolt on kn you will get noise .
I have the RC40 single box stainless system and a bolt-on fitted to my mk1 , it is a bit noisy but I do not have a back seat which does not help . The good thing is it does mean Dean can here me accelerating on the motorway a mile ahead of him though , doesnt it Dean ;D

Have you had a air filter change as well. As that will increase the induction noise as the air filter is now a open filter when the original one is in a box. So much quiter
Also and bigger performance exhaust will be louder,
More noise, humming , droning
But a bit of a power and performance gain.
There is always plus and minus.
And yes I can hear dave put his foot down when in convoy
