Hi, now our Mini is on the road it seems to be running a bit hot. When up to warmed up and during normal running the temperature gauge needle sits just below the red and then goes into the red when going uphill and when travelling over 70mph. The cooling system spec is..... 1275 Metro engine. New genuine water pump with cast iron impellor. 3 Core standard radiator (fairly new,no damage). Large water pump pulley. 82 degree thermostat. 50/50 Water & antifreeze mix. I thought it may be showing the high temperature because I'm still using a Metro sender with a Mini dash but it seems Metro and Mini senders are the same Any ideas

Also using a plastic fan.

Weak mixture due to being leaned off to pass the emissions test? Faulty thermostat? Take the stat out, put it in a just boiled pan of water to see if it opens. Fan the correct way round?

a trick a few people do is to drill 6, 4mm hole around the flat on the thermostat to help water flow and cooling.

True true,
Well like paul has already said check your fan, still getting hot when driving a 70 mph is not right it should be staying cool, it normal over heats sitting in traffic
It's easy to do and sometime hard to know which way round your fan goes. I been there but it should be sucking the hot air away and blowing through the inner wing.
Don't do what edd china did on wheeler dealer and got rid of the mechanical fan and replace with a electric one, it's not what is for, your ment to keep the mechanical one and the electric one is to aid if it goes over a cernern temp then cut off once it's below. So there is a moke out there with a electric fan buzzing way all the time it's driving.

Thanks for the replies chaps..... Today I checked the fan...its on the correct way. I took thermostat out and placed it in boiling water and it opened but only about 1.5 mm so after a quick chat with a chum I decided to cut out the centre and replace the outer ring. With this set up the gauge now sits at half way when in traffic and rises slightly when "given some welly" and the drops again to halfway when slowed down. I haven't been able to see what happens at higher speeds for longer periods.

Yesterday we gave the car a run at 60-70mph and the temperature rose again to just under the red but not into it so that's an improvement. This morning before driving to the Cranliegh Car show I moved the front number plate down from the front grille to below the bumper to see if that helped,it did !!! It seems the number plate was stopping air flow into the engine bay because now it has been moved the temperature needle sits on thin white line above the thick line on the gauge at 50-60 mph, rises slightly but not into the red at 60-70mph and then drops to halfway around town.

Now if you had said the number plate was on the grille ;D In 2000 Shawn and I were in a Mini club and were on our way back from Riv Run . One of the 998's was running hot until we took the number plate off the grille. As far as drilling holes in the stat , I have put several Metro engines in Mini's, including in the Mk1 . Every one had 6 3mm holes drilled in the stat . Never been a issue under normal or spirited driving . Queing up at bloody Crystal Palace for the World record attempt was another matter but I wont get started on that LSMOC B*LLS UP.
