Hi Stephen, yeah I think you're right there, nothing we can't handle though. We have a mutual friend.........Sean Bedford. I've known him for about 20 years and used to be his mechanic when he was Stock Rod racing and grass track racing before that, which means I sort of know your dad as well when he use to have the V8 Mk3 Escort grasstracker. I shall be getting Sean to paint Lenny when I finally finish welding as he did a superb job of painting a 2cv which I restored a few years back,it still turns up at 2cv shows looking as fresh as when he finished it. Ohh my name is Grant by the way. Small world. I posted the photo links so as not to bung up the forum with huge pics. Cheers.

We spent this morning shopping for those must have items that every restorer needs to keep going through long day's in the garage tea, coffee, pot noodles, polystyrene cups, plastic cutlery and then we bought some stuff the car will need seam sealer, red oxide, smooth white hammerite, rust converter, lots of paint brushes, wire brushes ect. Then this afternoon we went and borrowed an engine hoist from a chum and lifted the old auto engine out. Lewis removed the padded plastic dash top so that it does'nt get damaged when we repair the scuttle panel. Tomorrow we will have a good tidy up before we try to get the shell on to its side.

I vaguely remember the escort, think I was only 2 or 3 at the time though! Yea small world, but even more so in the Mini / racing scene. Progressing well, always good to get em on their side like that.

Well, today I think I've managed to save the HIF44 carb from it dunking in the ditch it's previous owner gave it when the engine was fitted in the Metro. There was quite a bit of water staining inside and the needle was really gungy but with careful cleaning it's turned out OK. Tomorrow we will get the rear subframe out and then see what state the boot floor is in.

Today went to plan with no hitches. We managed to free the seized and snapped subframe bolts by welding a nut to the bolt then applying loads of heat with a blow torch. We repaired the rusty hole around the subframe mount and some other holes that were covered by the plastic arches, then we attacked the various surface rust patches around the body with the faithful wire brushes and then painted them with red oxide. No work tomorrw so I will spend another day in the garage probably sorting the the rear brakes.

After the hectic weekend today was taken at a more leisurely pace. It started with a clear out of all the old scrap body panels and other metal bits including the bottom end of the auto engine that we had piled in the corner, this was taken to Ripleys and I was very happy with the £28 I got for it all. Then when I got back in the garage I decided to have a "quiet" day and so painted the bottom end of the Metro engine and box. i151.photobucket.com/albums/s159/Biggelmo/The%20Family%20Affair/WP_000129.jpgI then gave the unleaded head off the auto engine a quick decoke and clean before taking a few photo's for it's ebay listing.

I managed to get to the lockup for a couple of hours today. The first box of goddies arrived from Huddersfield Mini Spares which contained a set of Goodridge brake hoses and a pair of Gaz rear shocks so they are now fitted to the shell and rear subframe. Then after several pancakes tonight I finished off grinding in the valves and refitting them to the cylinder head. The head will go back on the block as soon as I get a head gasket set from one of the local factors. Does anyone have any head gasket reccomendations ??
